Mulling over a Couple of Possible Projects

This is good advise if you want to get it finished, if you're too lazy to inlet a lock you are way too lazy to figure out what all is wrong and how to correct an improper lock location and then do it. WAY harder than inletting to begin with.

    Barrel Twist help 58 cal

For an elk thumper and PRB I would go with a twist in the upper 60's, maybe up around 70 or a bit over. That's what my 58 is built for, and I went with a 70.

    Barrel Twist help 58 cal

How are you going to shoot it? What will the finished gun weigh? For targets I would probably opt for a twist in the 50's so I could be fairly confident it would shoot well 100 and in with 50- maybe 80 grains. For a hunting gun I would look for high 60's low 70's and know I would need to...

    chisels....lesson learned.

The Schaaf bench chisel set arrives pretty dull, to be fair they would be totally fine to excellent for general carpentry and general finish carpentry in softer woods and they are impressive when compared to box store chisels. The angles aren't bad and the heat treat is good. I sharpen on a...

Red’s Incredible Traditions Kentucky Build: Probably not what you would have done…

Building always goes better in flip flops, as does putting your car out when it catches on fire and stomping the field out that your burning car caught on fire but that is a story for another day.......

Lapping the Barrel with JB bore Paste

My Investarms 54 is also VERY difficult to load after a couple shots, it's moderately difficult to load if you shoot one, dry patch swab and shoot. It shoots really well, so I am going to keep shooting it as is, it never cuts a patch so I will shoot it until it loads easily or not. The bore on...

    Coating inside the barrel

IF I were going to do it I would have it chrome lined. It is my opinion that there is nothing you can do to reduce fouling from black powder, but you can influence how easy or difficult it is to load the next ball or clean when done shooting. You can also change the corrosion resistance of the...

    Mortiser mill

If you follow the inletting black or soot it will be perfect. Once it starts down into the stock just keep nipping off the black and it will go down, perfectly straight. You cannot get in a hurry, and you won't know till you try. Soft wood from the box store won't cost much, after that it's...

    Mortiser mill

I'd suggest getting the chisels out and inlet a barrel in a piece of soft wood from the box store. Get a 4x4 and you can do it 4x on each end. See how well or not well it comes out, do it a little better each time and pretty soon I think you'll be confident enough to do a plank for a rifle...

    Mortiser mill

If you want to shortcut the barrel inlet process just use a router to cut a channel? Lots cheaper.

    To carve or not

I have seen plain wood guns that were carved and were stunning, Jim Kibler has carved some straight grained stocks that are truly amazing and the carving IS the star of the show. I have also seen some with exceptionally well figured wood that were carved and they were also stunning, so I think...

    Kinda different scrimshaw

I think that is VERY good work. I would be proud as heck to own that, traditional scrim or not.

    Not swamped but

A solder on sight doesn't worry me at all. If it was a rifled barrel I would go swamped, I want some hanging weight on the end for offhand or shooting off sticks. It makes the sight wobble slower and the rifle in general more stable, in my opinion. If it was a big rifle, like a 62 or a 69 or...

I’d cold bend the tang. No sense getting anything that’s part of the breach plug hot.

    Round Ball Test Pack

I need the same kit for a 62 rifle I’m going to build this fall, I’ll split some balls with you. I’d be fine with 12-15 balls of each size to get in the ballpark and refine from there. 25 wouldn’t hurt anything. I am looking at .600-.615” range. Don’t want to mess with patches heavy enough to...

    My investarms gemmer

Nice rifle. If it loads easily try heavier patches and also .535 balls. These rifles will flat shoot when you get a good and tight patched ball in the charge range it likes.
