Well I got the Smoothbore, but now...

So am I supposed to bend this barrel right in the middle then?
  2. Travis186

Well I got the Smoothbore, but now...

I'll have to spend some time wrapping my brain around this one. If I bend the barrel in the direction I want the ball to go, aiming dead center at the target will now push the ball further right, due to triangulation. In my brain, like any front sight adjustment, I'd have to bend the barrel in...

Well I got the Smoothbore, but now...

Not sure I'm confident enough to do this properly but I like the idea. I'm assuming the barrel will be bent in the same direction a front sight would be moved, which means follow POI correct?

Well I got the Smoothbore, but now...

How do I make it shoot straight? As you can see, the gun shoots great, but for me, it shoots high and right, even with shot. I was able to play with my sight picture a little bit and bring this bad boy down to zero, but whose to say in the "heat of the moment" I'll be able to to maintain that...

    Barrel cleaning issue

This is an interesting issue. I would fill the bore up with soapy water, moosemilk or something and let it sit for an hour or two, dump it, patch it out, and attack again with a combination of JB Bore Paste/Iosso and a good brush. Keep in mind if you're using a brass jag, it will leave black on...

    Lead melting temp

I run pure at about 780ish due to no tin. Tin lead's I run at 750, antimonial alloys at 720ish.

    How do these patches look?

They look fine to me. I don't personally get too caught up in what my patches look like after the fact unless I'm having accuracy issues. If I'm printing nice tight groups on paper, I don't even bother to look for the patches on the ground.

Value for money powder horn and shooting pouch

I bought a cheap horn from crazy crow and my possibles bag from track o da woof. There are probably better options. For deer I'm not planning on carrying the possibles bag or horn. I'll keep the charges in brass tubes I'll use as speed loaders, and extra roundballs and patches in a little snuff...

    Kelly sights

Baldwin is an excellent choice as well. I run a Steve baldwin long range soule for BPCR silhouette and I have been more than satisfied. Really, any of the tang sights from the well known big makers are going to serve the purpose well.

    Warm water and dish soap?

About 2 or 3 moosemilk (ballistol/water) patches to get things soaking before I leave the range and then just cold tap water when I get home, with one of those TOTW flush things that clamps around the barrel. Does the job just fine.

WITHDRAWN 40 Caliber Flintlock Trade Gun built by Ted Kramer

Here are some better pictures. You can see the small blemishes (my own fault) around the rear sight, and there are some small scratches on the gun from the weekend it spent in South Texas brush country. The ram rod tubes were tapped with a brass mallet to form an oval shape to hold the hickory...

    I have grown weary.

I've burned a few pounds of Pdex in the past. I did find in colder weather ignition issues in caplocks, but it worked fine in cap and ball revolvers. I hold no ill will against anyone that uses it. Perhaps I should try it one of the flinters just once to see how it goes.

CLOSED Miroku 1863 Unfired $400 shipped

Could have... these scammers are smart now. I've been a mod on another popular gun forum for about 10 years now, and we've started noticing spammers that will blend in and post, sometimes good information for MONTHS and then strike out of the blue. You have got to be good at researching with the...

Do I NEED a Fowler or Fusil?

I will say, I'm more of a "spirit of" kind of guy. I'm not worried about being 100% historically accurate or correct anymore. I just want to enjoy these firearms for what they are, the challenges that come with using them and hunting with them, and give honor to the men that came before us by...

Just want to add, I AM a negotiable guy. If this 40 seems like something that would fit your collection well but the price seems too steep, make an offer.
