Will this leather work for a cows knee?

I'd love to have gotten some tanned deer hide, but this was last minute, need to make something within 2 days sort of situation.

Will this leather work for a cows knee?

I have a hunt this weekend with lots of snow in the forecast. This will be my first time hunting with a muzzleloader and it's a flinter. Unfortunately, I didn't think about a cows knee until yesterday. I know almost nothing of leather and had none on hand but a frozen deer hide in th freezer...

    Rear sight

Is this the one you're referring to? The hole is about 0.062. the ring stands about 0.062 off the flat of the blade and the outer width of the ring is about 0.150. Yes, I think the hole is likely too small to be used at the normal position of ~12" from the breech. I think it would...

    Half Octagon/Round Barrel

I assume this would make for a larger wobble zone if shooting off hand, right?

How to you file your front sights?

Do you have this configuration without the typical rear v or notched sight, or do you leave the rear v/notch sight in place and just have the front blade, middle v/notch, and rear aperture all lined up? I made one of those tang screw mounted rear aperture sights out of sheet metal and line that...

    Hand built vs production

@Dialn911 are you dead set on a flintlock? Your hunt is coming up very soon. It might be easier to get one of the TC cap guns for sale here for this year's hunt and keep looking for a flinter for next year. From what I've seen other people do, those TC Hawken and renegades are very accurate.

    Flint knapping hammer ?

Thanks for the pictures and information! I'll have to start working soon on some of the smaller pieces of chert to see if I can shape them into a useable flint by pressure flaking. After refreshing a few with the tool I made, it doesn't seem it would be overly hard to get a useable flint

Opinions needed...too "out there" for a long rifle or not?

@Psycho Mike , do you know who Wallace Gusler is? Here is one of his rifles. Wallace Gusler's latest rifle

    Moravian inspired build

Thanks for sharing your build every step of the way. It's really helpful seeing some of the tools for various steps that I didn't have tools for. I'll be looking back to this thread when starting my next rifle . It's looking amazing.

    Flint knapping hammer ?

Thank you for the information, I appreciate it. I ground the humps off the top of my flints so they would sit in the jaws better, and I think I should be able to flip them over after a while and continue using them after the edge climbs up the bevel pretty far. Would you mind sharing a picture...

    Flint knapping hammer ?

For pressure flaking a flint to refresh the edge, do you always want to push pressure downward towards the flat side of the flint or does it depend on whether you use the flint bevel up or down?

    Flint knapping hammer ?

Can you elaborate on the "hard glazed spots"? I am green ;)

It was in his WTB post on ALR forum.

Kibler has announced a Hawken Kit in the works.

Thanks again, @Notchy Bob , for yet another history lesson. Your contributions always make me smile. I do hope Mr. Kibler decides on a rifle that uses one of the less commonly known breach snails that are currently unavailable to the builder, such as the one that is on the "ETC" rifle in...

    Flint knapping hammer ?

I've searched for tutorials or instruction on this but can't find anything

    Flint knapping hammer ?

Is that notch used like a lever? Put the flint edge in there and torque the tool upward to refresh the flint edge? How does that method compare to pressure flaking or hammer knapping?

    Flint knapping hammer ?

Are there any good pressure flaking tutorials for gun flints? I've got some that need to be sharpened.

Unusual (to me) Bill Large barreled rifle

False alarm. It's just a very similar rifle.

Unusual (to me) Bill Large barreled rifle

I'm fairly certain there's one just like this in the mountain man museum in Pinedale Wyoming. I had a picture but can't find it
