    Lets see some percussion revolvers!

I have a soft spot for transitionals. This is a Beattie.

    Another Tranter -4th model.

    Is This Possible?

Barry Cryer joke: " It started with forgetting to do my zip, then I started to forget to put it away, nowadays I don't always remember to get it out." It's a slippery slope - from another oldie.

    Is This Possible?

A quote from Rifleman Green: "Three of these big ugly fellows came within ten yards of me and my front-rank man; I had got my ball in my rifle, but had not time to return the ramrod, so both ball and ramrod went through one of them. My comrade fired, and the ball struck another in the breast. I...

Anyone know the origin of this pistol?

When my father was active in the 30's the percussion revolvers he collected were only 70 or 80 years old.

    Defarbed

I would not like to comment on the visibility of markings, but I can certainly see the need to tone down modern blueing.

    Defarbed

I can see the issues between defarbing and outright forgery are complex. What I don't understand, is why the example in the video should be made to look so much rougher than the 150+ year old one. Do defarbers use serial numbers known to be bogus to reduce the chance of their efforts being...

    Defarbed

My issue with defarbing is the "distressing" that is part of the process. Personally, I would aim to make the piece look like an original that had survived 150 years in slightly better than average condition rather than having suffered a lot of neglect.

    Any linguists out there?

Your wish is my command! While I was at it I thought I ought to show a close up of the barrel.

    Any linguists out there?

Please do, I look forward to learning something.

    Any linguists out there?

This is a "knee blunderbuss" that is in need of some attention. Such pieces are usually just described as "Ottoman". The engraving on the lock is not Turkish (old or new). It bears some resemblance to Cyrillic but is not Russian (old or new). Can anyone identify it?

    Best oil for rust prevention

It will probably seem overly fussy, but I never put firearms or swords away using bare hands. I keep a pair of "white" cotton gloves handy so there is no chance of accidentally leaving fingerprints. I say "white" because they pick up oil so if anything is left behind it won't lead to rust.

    1851 Navy Pepperbox

I'm sorry, I cannot see the rationale of the "Colt pepperbox". If you are going to make a pepperbox, surely it would be more satisfactory to make something more like this an honest design.

    Howdy folks

    A warm welcome from Scotland.

Just for comparison, a Longspur numbered in the 900's, the rammer is on the left.

    Best oil for rust prevention

I can accept there are more modern and perhaps better oils but I still use Rangoon Oil on my (unfired) collection. The smell to me is the smell of antique firearms.

    A seasonal thought from Scotland.

Thinking about New Year toasts on the occasion of Hogmanay, it struck me that one was particularly appropriate for this august forum. I propose Lang may your lum reek. This translates to "Long may your chimney smoke". One and all, please accept this heartfelt wish from Scotland.

50th Anniversary of WATERLOO w/Rod Steiger

Funnily enough, I was watching a clip from this yesterday to listen to the French march "la Victoire est a nous" (Victory is ours) and I was reminded of one of my pet hates - the stars are patently not riding. I can see it would be too risky putting an expensive actor on a real horse but the...

    Polishing Brass

Admittedly this has not been fired or even outside for a vey long time, but I know it has not been polished for 50 years, it just gets a soft cloth run over it once in a while. The ironwork gets Rangoon oil from time to time.
