    Loading shot without wads

I hunt a more western US style of environment. There are some in close shots but there are also some big ones. I hunt from the ground mostly stalking when in thick bush but I'm sure this will provide all the punch needed in those scenarios on a big red stag

    Loading shot without wads

The whole notion that you can use near on anything is part of what really excites me about this gun. It may not be my best hunting gun but I feel like it will be the most fun. Thank you for the replies I will look around at what I have at home and use whatever I can find I suppose!

    Loading shot without wads

I've had my fowler for 2 weekends now and because of postal delays still have no wads to use for shot. What is a household alternative I could use just to run a few shots downrange as I'm champing at the bit to get out for a shot with my new toy. I was thinking of scrunching up some newspaper...

    Is this a Hawken?

Hawken is a brand but has become a style. I think of it as two styles one that tries to replicate the originals in form and the other is the style that you have shown (not sure what you would call them). Unless you buy an actual hawken - which you still can - it's only the hawken style rifle...

    Just ordered from Pedersoli.

    Which is the right flint?

Thank you for the replies. As I said I literally just had a chance to go over the gun for the first time, it came with lead but when I can get a piece of scrap leather I will change it over. I did check the half **** and the current piece of flint at least sits perfectly to my eyes, 1mm or 2...

    Which is the right flint?

You can see in the previous post where the flint has been striking, granted uneven but is this the right width of contact or too much or too little? It does spark though at least, but you can see from the pic it's in the forward half of the pan. Not sure if this is OK or likely to cause...

    Which is the right flint?

I picked up my first flintlock on the weekend and have finally had a chance to look at it. I ordered some 1" flints after advice from another forum member who also has a pedersoli Indian trade gun. In comparison to the flint it came with there is a fair bit of difference. I'm below the level...

    Seneca and squirrel

Grouse are probably spread thin if it's a good crop. Good work on the tree chicken.

    Jaeger Kit for New Builder?

Only on this forum could someone ask about a jager and get suggested a kibler. I'd love a jaeger so will be curious to see what comes up.

    50 cal cva hawkens

You could possibly turn the hawken into a 54 rifled gun. Depends on how much you have to play with, I've always wanted a 58. I have a 54 and a 62 now, but there's always room for one more!

    Powder!!!

    I got a quote on 4 lbs here at $375. Don't complain.

Anyone got a deer or bear this year? Our season opens this weekend, wondering how folks round the country are doing.

One for the small game, 64 yard shot on this hare. I think the hawken is enjoying its new life as a hunting gun instead of poking paper with its old owner.

    Unreliable ignition Traditions Hawken Percussion

I'd put money on crud in the flash channel or oil that hasn't been cleaned out after storage. The only misfire I've ever had was when I didn't clean oil from the flash channel/breach.

    Cleaning Pedersoli Frontier breach

A .243 brush does the job I mostly just get a real tight seal with a couple of cleaning patches and draw the rod up near the muzzle. You will hear water filling up the barrel. Then push really hard and it will force the water and a lot of crud out of the flash channel.
