Converting a Black & Decker Workmate to a Portable Loading Table

A Workmate is one of the more useful things you can have in your garage or shop! I've used mine to work on shaping a gunstock out on the patio when I didn't feel like being inside on a beautiful day.

Could something like this be from 18th century?

Almost everything about this knife shouts 2022. Take a look at Wick Ellerbee's knives to see the shapes and styles that are period correct for the 1700's. That's a great looking knife for 2022 deer hunting!

    First French Scalper attempt

Nice work! From what I can see it's a pretty accurate impression of a knife from the 18th Century.

    clay pipes

The next fun thing to try if you are going to smoke a clay pipe is to grow your own tobacco! You can buy tobacco seeds on the internet. I grew three plants from seedlings given to me by a fellow reenactor. They will grow in northern climates, and they will grow well in poor soil. I was...

Ask help to cast my first round balls

I would suggest something with a smaller volume (too heavy with lead in it!) and a longer handle.

Ask help to cast my first round balls

First: wear gloves and eye protection when casting balls. Create your set-up so that you can SIT while you are doing this. If possible, sitting on the concrete floor of a garage (well-ventilated) works well. Watch this YouTube video and others to see how it's done. Using a small iron ladle with...

    English vs French scalping knives

The thickness may not be totally period correct, but that extra thickness will add a bit more sturdiness to the blade for general use. I'd leave it thicker.

wisdom vs. experience... or, today I learned...

    No sense looking for trouble....

I can see, I can see!

Cataract surgery was a miracle for me, too. I wore glasses from the time I was 12 years old until I was 65! I had to become an old man first before I could ditch the glasses......hahahaha

    old family powder horn

    Nice horn and.....GREAT story!

    Stupid, stupid, stupid

What I have inscribed on my powder horn: (With my best attempt at all "s" letters looking like "f", a la 1700's) "Of all the leffons ye muft recall, Firft the powder, then the ball.."

    No Such Rifle !

Nice work. As to the story: "Shtuff happens...."

    Recent NYS Firearms Law

It may not have been actually codified yet, but it will. Black powder firearms are not a target of gun control initiatives, because they aren't even close to being a part of the cause of the horrendous number of firearm deaths in America. Even Canada, which has pretty tough gun laws, classifies...

    Recent NYS Firearms Law

From what I hear, muzzleloaders and reenactors in particular have now been exempted from any new restrictions in the new NYS gun legislation. This is as of Sept, 9, 2022. So....what is all the complaining about?

    No digging today!

    Yes! You've gotta have TWEED!

    No digging today!

I like the way youse guys hunt wearing a sport coat. It looks very........er.......sportsmanlike. And it has leather elbow patches, too! You would never see someone hunting over here wearing that!

    Being here expensive!!!

But.....think of all the sinful, self-destructive, illegal stuff you could be wasting your money on. Muzzleloading is educational, character-building, and just plain good, clean fun.

I joined the dry ball club today

Ball screws work! .....and the cleanup afterwards is very easy....

    Aqua Fortis and BLO

    I think it looks great!

    Definition of "defarb"

Nothing historically offensive in that stuff! And some of the items, like the non-slip soles, are SAFETY-related. As one of my reenacting buddies says: "We are here to learn by reenacting, but not by hurting or killing ourselves".
