can i please see your cherry stocks finished with oven cleaner,,,,,,,,,,,,,

As I mentioned, lye reacts with the tannic acid in the wood to change the color. UV light is supposed to do the same, but I put cherry scales on a knife 5+ years ago, applied BLO, and it NEVER changed color or darkened. Conversely, I had a block of wood leftover from a stock that I...

can i please see your cherry stocks finished with oven cleaner,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Add 1 tablespoon of lye to 1 pint of water. It will give off vapor, so do this in a well ventilated area and don't breathe it. Likewise, use chemical resistant, or at least nitrile gloves to keep it off the skin. Swab or brush the mixture onto the cherry, and it will react with the tannic...

    Black powder in 2022 ?

Back when I shot BPCRS, I went through quite a bit of powder. A couple of us drove to a distributor and bought a couple of CASES each so as to have the same lot number of powder. Other times I ordered by the case and had it delivered via UPS. Buying a few # at a time simply didn't make sense...

    What do you think...?

I used 85gr ffg in my TC .54 with PRB. Try bumping the charge to 90gr and 100gr before you get too excited.

    Peep/globe combo for hunting?

IMO, a globe front sight is for the target range. I spent many years behind such sights, and it was about choices of front inserts when the light changed. For sure, the concentric circles of the aperture and globe aid in alignment, but that same globe blocks field of view. In the woods when...

    Brownells Oxpho-blue ???

An early flintlock wouldn't have been browned - Armory bright or maybe charcoal blued, but not browned. I used Oxpho Blue on a couple of barrels and it holds up OK for a while. It looks pretty good as a distressed finish if you blue the barrel a couple of times and then steel wool it back an...

Any idea how old or what school this rifle is from?

I see a big mix of old and newer styles, LH flintlock, so a contemporary fantasy piece would be my assessment.

    .72 caliber rifle.

I shot 85gr fffg (3 drams) under a .690" PRB from a TC Tree Hawk. That was enough for that gun, but I doubt it weighed 7#. I've shot a .69 rifle with 140gr ffg and PRB, and its recoil was sharp, but weighed less than 9#. 11# should really help tame the 12 bore.

    Hesitant on a .58

I fully expect my .62 PRBs are 1600fps MV from 28-1/2" of barrel, so shouldn't be a problem to make a .58 go that fast or faster.

I can get as much of this as I want, is it lead?

You had chips that you cut off that could have been scanned. In that you can scratch with a fingernail, its lead or a relatively soft lead alloy. The numbers most likely are a part # for the robot. BUY IT and run!

I can get as much of this as I want, is it lead?

I would have expected the weights to be lead or iron, and you aren't gonna cut iron with your pocket knife. If you have a local scrapyard or ?? with an XRF, ypu could get a quick scan.

    58 good and bad

If I were hunting elk or moose, I would pefer my .62. I do have a .58 in a stock to be built to replace the one I sold. My .58 was fed .562" balls and 80-100gr fffg Goex. The .62 gets .605" (325gr) over 100-120gr fffg Goex.

    Is this an improved chamber

The liner is D&T low of center on the bore. That isn't how I would build a rifle, but is where the hole needs to be to work with their lock and trigger. I'm not a fan of chambered breeches, and would prefer the chamber be closer to bore diameter, but that's just my way of thinking. If it...

    Two Patchboxes?

I've seen an original Ohio rifle with THREE patchboxes. Two on the lock side and one on the cheek side.

    Allen Head Vent Liner

I have or had some TC allen head liners and IIRC, they were drilled closer to .07" and would dribble a litte fffg. I prefer smaller diameter flash hole, 1/16" or even smaller if reliable. For a too low flash hole, do you have room on the side flat to go 5/16 or 3/8" and off center?
