    R E Davis Twigg lock

An early Virginia LR that I built many years ago had a Davis Twigg lock and it went well w/ the English styled LR. At the time some complained of the weak main spring which did bend when at full ****.....only shot it a few times w/o any problems. The lock plate shape is quite nice and adds...

No longer building, but this pic......

Due to very bad eyesight, I'm no longer able to build MLers which I've enjoyed doing for the past 46 years. After a shaky start due to over confidence { was a toolmaker}, finally settled down and built a few MLers. The pic shows 2 blanks and bbls, one partially completed LR and the finished LR...

    Scratch built longrifle

I think nearly all builders who make MLers for a living would be able to construct a LR from what is described as "from scratch".....but supporting oneself and family in the gunbuilding business doesn't financially allow it. Even many of the original builders bought the locks and bbls as...

Can I turn a set trigger set up to a single trigger set up?

W/ both my TC Hawken and a later scratch built Hawken . the setting trigger {rear} was made inoperable and the front trigger was then altered for a 3 lb pull. The reason was that for a hunting rifle, I prefer a single trigger. Went elk hunting w/ a friend and one day he was hunting up a...

    Now what?

W/ my 4 first builds I did the bbl inletting and the RR grooves and holes but thereafter sent that work to Fred Miller and then to Dave Rase. If I had kept these LRs I probably would have done it , but all were sold and the cost was recouped. I agree that starting w/ a blank is easier...

    Scratch built longrifle

The only shop that I know of that builds LRs completely from scratch is at Williamsburg and don't know if they still do it and if they do, the prices would be fantastic. Probably there are some builders who approach a completely scratch build, but still buy some parts.....bbls come to mind...

    Proud tang

Did the sides of the tang have draft? This facilitates an easier and nicer fit. I don't file the tang down until the trigger plate is in and the tang bolt is used.

First build. Looking for advice on how to start.

Sorry for the spelling error....."pasts set" should have been parts set. Most of the parts sets offered by suppliers are a bunch of parts that can be made into a quality LR if the builder is capable enough. Kits are usually factory produced and are quite simple to assemble which mainly entails...

First build. Looking for advice on how to start.

Some thoughts on a first MLer......Kibler's offerings assemble into quality LRs, but are lacking as far as learning to build LRs.....although the finished product if done properly will show one how a LR should look. The pasts sets { these are not simple kits} on the market will much...

    Proper luster of metal parts?

For a bbl that will be browned.....after draw filing, a light rub w/ 220 grit paper. A slight etch from the LMF covers well, so why spend time going any further than 220? Brass parts get a final papering w/ 320 grit and then 0000 steel wool. Usually use 44/40 cold blue and 0000 steel wool to...

Stock Finishing with Minwax Wipe On Poly finish

My first build was finished w/ hardware store BLO and after months of sitting around waiting for the stuff to dry and finally thought it was dry so took it deer hunting. Was warm that year and it was raining instead of snowing and in short order, my stock finish became a gooey mess on which I...

Cutting a barrel - send it to someone with a lathe or use a hacksaw?

I use different size ball bearings that have flats for clamping a Vise Grips along w/ lapping compound. The ball bearing is rotated and not too long after a really nice chamfer is achieved. My .45 squirrel LR has a chamfer made by a ball bearing and head shoots squirrels regularly. ....Fred

    Barrel Browning

To neutralize the LMF brown ammonia is used....found that baking soda isn't strong enough especially if the brown is thick. My motor oil has seen many dunks of red hot steel but still is what I use after the ammonia. LMF is a "strong" chemical and requires ammonia and a lot of patience to...

Only did one bbl and after using the hacksaw, squared the end w/ a disk sander.....Fred

    Silver wire inlay

The "wire should be 3/32" or a little less wide and the thickness varies.....I used .008. A sharp tip of a chisel or knife is held on the "wire" which is then pulled cutting a shallow groove. both sides should be done. After the 'wire" is inletted, the stock is wetted and will shrink around...

Tips for achieving this forearm profile

All my LRs have an upper forestock molding and a line is cut in w/ the tool riding in the RR groove......this tool can concave the molding, but I don't use it for that. The adjustable set screw is the cutter. The forestock shape has to be nearly done to use this tool. I don't use contoured...

    Kibler Kit help

When I wander through hardware stores or depts, I'm always on the lookout for cheap, wooden handled screwdrivers which are then hollow ground to fit the slots of the screws presently being used. I've got perhaps 50 screwdrivers and most are the reground "cheapies". Although cheap, have never...

    Cleaning ceramic stones

When I was a tool and diemaker, I submerged the stones in a large coffee can filled w/ mineral spirits w/ a press on plastic lid as did all the other toolmakers. The stones were never cleaned and were always ready to be used. I do the same in my home shop.....Fred
