what pan powder do you use?

After reading all the comments, I have one QUESTION? What did they use in the old days, when all you had was flint locks. I can not see the military carrying 2 grades of powder, or even the pioneers out in the frontier.

    Blackpowder Differences?

I use goex 1F in my 20 pound mortar, as that what i first used, will try some Schutzen, as it is lower cost. I use Schutzen, 1f/ 2f in my cannons, one is a 1.25 in bore 2 are 1.5in bore because of cost(2 to 4 ounces)depending if live fire or blank, ,i can burn up to 3 pounds a day. I have even...

    Coehorn

This is my full bronze coehorn mortar 5.8in bore, fires a 20 pound ball, you can see the ball on the right side. Range up to 1/2 mile(would love to have a range to do 1/2 mile), 1oz 1F black powder shoots the ball 100 yards.

    First post and question

Dirk I agree with the above comments. My mortar is 5.8in bore, and i do live fire demons here in my home state of Minnesota, i have lost 5 cannon balls at $75 each due to wind and they weigh 20 pounds. In my mortar, 1oz powder is for appox 100 yards and i have a max range of 1/2 mile. As...

    Which percussion caps to use?

I have a Hawken style rifle in .50, and had misfire problems with it, tried magnum caps, and still had misfires. I used both bp and pyrodex, fixed the problem by taping the rifle from the opposite side of the hammer, misfires stoped, think i was not getting enough powder under the nipple(yes it...

    been a long time ....

You do not need to stuff newspaper down the barrel. Just roll up a charge from cooking foil and put that down the barrel, remember to run a prick down the touch hole. I use 1.5 to 2 ounces of powder(cannon 1f or 2f) in my cannons, get the best boom from the cannon grade, i use 1f for live...

Why are or aren't you an NMLRA member?

I am A member of the Traditional Muzzleloading Association, as i HAVE no interest in the so called modern muzzle loading guns. To me there are for want to be muzzleloaders, who don't want to take the time to learn the art of muzzleloading.

    Cannon precision

I use a patch in my 1.25 in bore cannon, it shoots a 6oz lead ball that is 1.22in dia, it will hit the target at 100 yds. I do not use a patch ball in my 2 1.5in bore cannons as the ball is a cast to size, again I am using lead balls. In my 5.8 in bore mortar the balls are a loose fit and are...

How far can a ball travel?

My mortar has a max range of over 1000 yards. 8oz max powder 15 second flight time and that is in the book that came with it, and that ball weights 17 pounds. Have not fired it yet to max range, but will do so when i have a safe place to do so.

    Flintlock vs Percussion

I have shot flint and percussion, and i find they are both fun to shot, yes the flint is more work but that is part of the enjoyment of the hobby. If you want a real challenge try a matchlock, they will give you a challenge. i know some one who goes deer hunting with his, and gets a deer every...

    Bought A Coehorn

I use mine as a candy cannon some times, 1/2 oz power thick leather wad and pack it full of bite size candy. The kids love it, goes down range a good 100 feet. If you want fun get hold of dragon eggs, they look good after dark, with 1oz powder they get about 40 feet up in the air. I have now...
