    Convert to the Holy Black

I prefer real black simply because it is easier to ignite than most subs. As far as subs go, I exclusively use BH209 these days. Basically, if a rifle (always unmentionable) will handle BH209, that’s what I use. If it won’t (traditional as well as a surprising number of unmentionables won’t)...

    Real Black vs Pyrodex velocities

Your home made powder is probably (almost certainly) producing lower velocities than pyrodex causing the higher impacts. The lower speed causes the ball to be in the barrel longer thus exiting the muzzle when the barrel is higher in recoil. This phenomenon is easily observed in fixed sight...

Hawken Rifles, What's All The Hoopla?!

Speaking personally, I believe there is an allure to the “Hawken” style rifle. Obviously its actual historical role in the fur trade era is overstated, no one disputes this. Obviously it benefited from the Bicentennial & surrounding Hollywood films featuring it. Obviously it has benefited from...

    Brown Bess Flints?

I hope it’s ok to share a link, if not I apologize. These are available & I believe were intended for use with a BB musket. Original 18th Century British and French Flintlock Musket Flints- Sold by the Pound

    Another .62 Smoothbore Grouse Hunt

I went out again with my 24 gauge trade gun but alas no grouse were harmed.

If T/C Would Have Made a Northwest Trade Gun...

I have a 56 SB Renegade with the plain trigger guard & single trigger. Like you, I thought it might be a “trade gun ish) arm. More so if it were flint but alas it’s percussion, though later trade guns were percussion.

Anyone else excited for squirrel season?

I love squirrel hunting! No one really hunts them in MT. But growing up in WV & OH I’ve always hunted them. In MT all we really have are red (not fox) squirrels and there is no season, no limit, & no license required. Locally they are known as “pine” squirrels. We had them in the higher parts...

WANTED T/C Flintlock barrel & lock

Hello. I’m passively looking for a barrel & lock to convert a T/C Hawken or Renegade from percussion to flint. Might even be interested in an entire rifle.

    European maple?

The style or type of arm isn’t exactly pertinent to the identification of the wood used. Now days I don’t do much with modern arms either, but I did this one years ago on a whim. I *believe* it’s a cousin to the maple that’s referred to as English Sycamore as it’s nothing like American sycamore...

    European maple?

I stocked this Traditions Tracker 209 inline rifle in what I was told was “English Sycamore” or “lacewood”. Is it the wood you mentioned?

    .62 Smoothbore Flintlock Grouse Hunt

Nice post! Looked like a spruce grouse (Franklins grouse) right? What part of the country are you in? I hunt them in western Montana with my 24 gauge Trade Gun.
