Was Dutch right about wiping between shots?

When I got into BP shooting, many here recommended getting Dutch's method. I did, was lucky enough to speak on the phone with him once. I still use his method and believe in it. I still wipe between shots, with moose milk of his recipe. Ive not noticed fouling/crud being pushed back with my...

    Ball-Patch work-up advice

I swab between every shot, but use drylubed patching, treated with a 7:1 Ballistol.and water solution. Sometimes, I'll use a wet patch lube like Mr Flintlocks and I can go 10 to 15 shots before loading gets tight. What I have found, if it's hard to load after X number of shots, that means some...

    Average Group

My best 5 shot group with a Flintlock, seated from a bench rest, has been @ 1.5" at 50yds.

    Investarms Bridger Hawken

I have an Investarms built Hawken, a .50 percussion Charles Daly import from 1985. It's a GREAT shooting rifle. It's rather plain visually, and has a more modern rear sight, but she's accurate. I never blame that gun for bad shots! Kills deer dead. Mine likes a .490 ball, 80gr of 2F Goex, and...

    WORST DAY AT THE RANGE!

I have painstakenly worked up loads for both of my sidelocks, shooting from 55gr to 100gr in 5 gr increments and both guns actually "like" 80gr of 2F. One likes Goex, one likes Swiss. I only shoot 80gr, period. Hunting, targets, whatever. Me and your guy would have issues.

    What is your procedure……

I usually wipe the Flint as well. I always poke a pin thru the touch hole then wipe the underside of the Flint with a cleaning patch, then prime, then shoot.

    2024/2025 Squirrel Hunting Thread...........

Thanks for the feedback. I'll be on the lookout for a Traditions Crockett or T/C Cherokee or Seneca. But, question.....if one were to contract a gunmaker to build you a rifle, knowing you have three .50cal guns already, and you wanted said gun(a flintlock) for 1) small game hunting, 2) target...

    2024/2025 Squirrel Hunting Thread...........

Forgive me if this question has been answered in the 73 pages of this thread, all of which I admittedly haven't read. I like squirrel hunting, usually use a .22. I like muzzleloaders too, have .50 cal flintlock and percussion. I'm a good enough shot with either to squirrel hunt with them, but...

    What is your procedure……

The size of Flint your gun takes matters. Bigger flints=more shots, in my experience(assuming a well running lock). My Dixie SMR uses small flints, 5/8x3/4. I get a good 20 shots out of a new English Flint. Then I'll knap it, move it up in the jaw a tad, and get 5 to 10 more, then its done...

Sales of Firearms and Ammo at Flea Market

I went to Friendship last weekend, as i usually do. Of course, the gunmakers/range side was nice as usual, the primitive area as well. I also went to the regular flea market, which while just as busy as ever, has been going downhill for years. Mostly junk, CBD crap, carnie food and As seen ON TV...

Flint Size for Dixie Tennessee Mountain Rifle

5/8 × 3/4 is right. I've never tried 3/4 wide flints. That WOULD be wider than the frizzen. I wish the gun took bigger flints. Bigger flints last longer. In my Dixie I get 25-30 shots per flint.

    Rifle vs. Smoothbore

I'd want a Flintlock rifle before getting a Flintlock smoothbore. That said, I have the rifle, really want the smoothbore. It'll be my next BP gun probably a Fusil de Chaisse in .62cal/20 GA, but maybe a mire traditional fowler.

    Do you gut your deer?

I've gutted every deer I've ever harvested right there on the spot where it died. And always will. I can't see any benefit to NOT doing it, other than WAAAY backcountry hunters using the gutless method and basically cutting off the meat/quarters to put in bags and backpack out. But I hunt where...

Running While Reloading Flintlocks - a necessary survival technique...

Cool video Mark! Ive thought about trying this, having read about the early longhunters/indian fighters doing it. We're those guns smoothbores or rifles? Or were the round balls undersized? I could see that seating the ball technique working with smooth bores + undersized balls, but no way would...

How long before a touch hole needs replaced ?

I have a touch hole liner, but its flat head screwdriver groove is worn out to the point that I'm gonna need to drill it out to change it. So I'm not changing it until I HAVE to. Has anyone had luck using a left handed drill bit to remove one of these, or(when I HAVE to) should I just buy an...

    Questions after range day

My statement IS definitive......for MY particular guns. I made no statement on what others should or shouldn't do, and no it wasn't inferred. And by the way Brokennock, youre being a **** to me for no good reason. Nobody likes a ****.

    Questions after range day

Really? I dont use brushes because they are not needed. i only shoot patched round balls. Maybe if i had different guns and shot lead conicals they might be useful.

    Questions after range day

My sidelocks have never seen a brush, and probably never will.

You never know what you’ll find in the truck!!

Makes me wonder, what in my truck could work? I do have a small can of WD40, and an even smaller(like 1oz) bottle of CLP. I bet those would do.

    L&R RPL04 Experience

Same situation. My Dixie SMR is still shooting with its original lock, with a replaced frizzen and frizzen spring. I bought the L&R lock, and while it fit the inletting about perfectly, it didn't work right. I took videos of what it was doing(was a set trigger/seer issue if I remember right) and...
