Charles Daly 45 caliber Italian made percussion rifle

I cant speak to the quality vs TC, CVA, etc, as I've never owned those. What I can say is, although visually these Investarms Hawkens are pretty "plain Jane" rifles, they are quality where it counts....in accuracy. I've won 2 out of the last 3 black powder shoots at my gun club shooting mine! My...

Charles Daly 45 caliber Italian made percussion rifle

My .50 Hawken is a Charles Daly made in 1985 by Investarms. Charles Daly was an importer, who got guns from multiple manufacturers in Europe and sold them in the US. If you dig deep on the internet, you can identify the makers mark and find the mfg date. I have the owners manual as a pdf file I...

    Dixie gun works mountain rifle

I really like my .50cal. I bought it here 4-5 years ago. It's had some work done on it. Since I've owned it, the original frizzen broke, but I was lucky enough to find another. Then the frizzen spring broke, replaced it with a different one from DGW, had to drill a hole in the lockplate. Works...

How hard is it to fit RPL lock?

I put a L&R RPL lock in a Dixie Gun Works Southern Mtn rifle. Spent some time getting the patina/finish match correct using Laurel Mounrain Barrel Brown. While it DID drop right in, it didn't work correctly with my triggers. I took videos, sent them to L&R, called them and explained everything...

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

I have a big, heavy range box, full of everything for all my BP guns. Today, I was off(rare) and put together a mini box/case for just stuff for my perc Hawken, so I don't have to bring EVERYTHING to the range(have a club shoot coming up). While doing that, I binge watched the latest 8 episodes...

    Investarm Hawken question

FWIW, I bought my Investarm .50cal Hawken at a show(Connor Prairie) like 4 years ago for $210 cash. It's a Charles Daly import, built by Investarm in 1985. It's been a great rifle, and a darn good shooter. I bring this up because the OP may be able to just pick up a whole other rifle for what...

    What caliber rifle to get?

You could try that. I'd probably go 10gr 4f on top the 40gr of 777. Its either gonna go bang, or it wont. That said, I think you're approaching it wrong. Buy the gun you want, then get the powder you need. 4f will always be good flintlock priming powder. 1 pound will last years, if not decades...

    Dry Lubed patching ?

Like many, I use the Dutch Schoultz ballistol and water method for patch lube. I have 2 questions that I'd like to hear some feedback on. 1. Once treated and dry, how long should a strip last? I keep treated strips in either pill bottles or zip lock bags. I'm guessing the ballistol, an oil...

A rifle that needs swabbed after every shot on a woodswalk??

I swab my barrel between every shot at the range. I use dry lubed patches, and I need to, for all the same reasons as the OP. But for woods walks, I use Mr Flintlocks patch lube. I'll pre prepare however many strips of patching that I think I'll need by getting them thoroughly wet with the lube...

Fusil de chasse a cheek slapper?

I've always liked these, and one will be my next BP gun(because there's always a "next" gun). But, they are NOT guns you commonly see for sale. I saw exactly none at Friendship last month. Outside of contracting a custom builder to make you one, paying $2-3k and waiting 6-8 months, what's the...

    Wiping between shots

I generally shoot using dry lubed patches. I find wiping between shots is absolutely necessary with dry lubed patches. On woods walks, load from the bag, etc, I use Mr Flintlocks patch lube and can easily go 12-14 shots between wiping. The accuracy is good, but the dry lubed patch groups ARE...

My First Flintlock - Dixie Gun Works Tennessee Mountain Rifle

I also broke the frizzen spring on my stock lock. DGW does have a frizzen spring that works, but one has to drill a new new hole on the lock plate for it to fit. I did that, it works, and I've had no problems with it. FYI. Lack of parts is the main reason I bought the L&R lock. After videos of...

My First Flintlock - Dixie Gun Works Tennessee Mountain Rifle

I broke my stock frizzen too. Dunno how, but I actually found a replacement. Good luck with that nowadays! That said, I took the broken one(a clean snap in half) to a local weld shop(with some very skilled metalworkers!) and they welded/brazed it back together. And I filed/grinded it down back...

My First Flintlock - Dixie Gun Works Tennessee Mountain Rifle

That's where I started too, initially using different patch lubes. Then I started using different patching thicknesses and measuring their compressed thickness with a micrometer. My gun likes a fairly tight load. It's nothing a short starter and ramrod have problems with; ive never needed a...

My First Flintlock - Dixie Gun Works Tennessee Mountain Rifle

I have one and love it. $400 is a great deal. Great shooter too. Mine likes the following load: 80gr 2f Swiss, powder, a .495 ball, patching is a .014 white cotton fabric from Joann Fabrics, drylubed with 6:1 Ballistol and water. Same patching dampened with Mr.Flintlocks is good too. And 70gr of...

    Cleaning tool

I got one and use it. It has to be MEGA tight, and it doesn't fit on every gun. But it fits on mine, and works great.

    50 cal wanted!

For $300, your most bang for the buck would be something used, built by Investarms. That builder is in Europe, but they've built guns for many different companies. Lyman Great Plains Rifle=Investarms built. Cabelas Hawken=Investarms built. I have a Chatles Daly .50cal perc Hawken that I bought...

    Why only one?

I used to think this too, as I hunt private land. 3 seasons ago, while climbing out of my treestand in the dark, I was charged by a large, barking wild dog. It was dark, my scoped deer rifle would not have been the optimal self defense weapon, as it was on my shoulder with a sling. I got his...

    Why only one?

Indiana and Ohio, where I hunt, allows pistols to be carried in both firearms season and muzzleloader season. But, you can't use a modern pistol to put a wounded deer down in ML season.

Powder charge. How much powder do you use.

I use 80gr of 2f in both my .50's, whether I'm shooting at deer or paper. If I need to use 3f instead, I use 70gr.
