    Offhand shooting?

I may have a slight flinch myself. I shoot offhand considerably better with my perc Hawken than I do with my flintlock longrifle. Yet the longrifle shoots better from a rest/bench. But that tells me the long, heavy rifle might just be a little more difficult to hold steady offhand. But also, the...

    Offhand shooting?

My son is a crack shot with everything......except his flintlock. He's an Army Infantryman, qualified expert with all weapons, is his rifle team's "squad designated marksman" and carries the $10,000 precision HK AR10, and he's always been good. He outshot me at age 13 with both rifle and shotgun...

    Triple Seven..you owe yourself a 1lb

    Ok then! If I buy 777, it'll be 3f!

    Triple Seven..you owe yourself a 1lb

Thx brokenbear. I do understand the difference between 2f and 3f.....in black powder. And also why most folks shoot larger granulation in larger calibers, ie 2f in .54-.62, 3f in .32-.45. I see .50cal as really "not caring" whether it's fed 2f or 3f, as that's my experience. But I was asking...

    Triple Seven..you owe yourself a 1lb

Brokenbear, why 777 3f and not 2f? I generally shoot 2f out of my .50cals, but have shot 3f. 80gr 2f and 70gr 3f hut about the same in my guns. Does 2f 777 NEED 209 primers or musket caps to go off?

What "fun" targets are your fav's

If im at the range for any extended amount of time, I almost always have an empty dip can to shoot at! Hang it from a string, or duct tape it to the target if it's windy.

    Triple Seven..you owe yourself a 1lb

I've never shot anything but real BP in my traditional muzzleloaders. I do have a scoped unmentionable, that I've never shot anything but Pyrodex pellets out of. I haven't taken it out of the closet in 4 years and will probably sell it soon. But, other than smelling like a skunks butthole, I got...

    New to Casting bullets

Thanks ^. Those are the tips I'm looking for. So, over a small fire/bed of coals, are there visual clues as to when the lead is near optimum pouring temperature? If an Ash puffs up into the ladle, dump it or keep pouring? I've never done it before.

    New to Casting bullets

Not my thing either! Don't play on EVER NEEDING to make ammo. But I have the stuff, haven't used it, want to hear best practices for using it. That's all.

    New to Casting bullets

I generally buy my lead balls. Have a good source, and I dont shoot a ton. But, I do have a bag mold and copper ladle from Larry Callahan that I bought, but have yet to actually use. While "how" to use it is pretty self explanatory(hey, I've seen "The Patriot" a time or two!), does anyone have...

How Far Can You Make Successful Kill Shots ?.

That's some good shooting, Mr. Kenton! Offhand, I definitely shoot my percussion Hawken better, but this past weekend I had the flintlock TN Mth rifle at the range.offhand at 50yds, all 5 shots I took were on the target(@ a 5" group, a little to the right). Then I shot a few at 100yds. Someone...

How Far Can You Make Successful Kill Shots ?.

I've killed a lot of deer, with every kind of hunting implement, and I don't think I've ever taken an offhand shot at one with a firearm. There's almost always "something" to use as a rest. And IMO, it's always better to use a rest. I shoot muzzleloaders offhand frequently. I use the bench for...

How Far Can You Make Successful Kill Shots ?.

That's how I look at traditional ML hunting. And more generally, any hunting where I'm using iron sights. Even with my 30-30 iron sighted lever gun, 100yds at noon on a sunny day is about as far as I'm willing to shoot at a deer. I'm not taking shots I'm not completely confident will result in a...

    Investarm Hawken flintlock

I have an Investarms percussion Hawken. It's a Charles Daly labeled import from 1985. Not the prettiest, but a darn good shooter that's given me zero problems, at the range or in the deer woods. Assuming perc and flinter barrels are the same(why wouldn't they be?), here's the kind of accuracy...

What makes for a good flintlock cleaning tube clamp?

You have a link or vintage info? I'm interested in that magnet tube system!

Which state is the best for ML?

I'm not saying anything. That could be the case, but I dont know. I've only been to the UP once, and thats what the guy told me. It was a cool little shop though: fishing gear, guns and ammo, trapping stuff.

Which state is the best for ML?

I was up in the UP a couple years ago, up near Munising, a little east of there. Stopped in a cool little mom and pop outdoor store and was talking to the owner. He said the wolf population has really hurt deer hunting up there.

Which state is the best for ML?

Indiana is pretty good. This year, firearm season was 11/12-11/27, and you can use muzzleloaders. Then the actual muzzleloader season ran 12/3-12/18. Basically, you can hunt with a smoke pole for a full month.

Removing the barrel on a hooked breech rifle for cleaning, yes or no??

I finish with patches of Barricade as well. That's great stuff! Usually, one wet patch worth, wait 5 min, then another wet patch. Then I wipe down ALL the steel parts with it before hanging it back on the wall.

Removing the barrel on a hooked breech rifle for cleaning, yes or no??

I have one of those cleaning nipples with tubing attached that I screw in, stick the tube in a jug of hot water and Dawn, and pump away with the range rod sucking the water in and out. leaving the barrel in the stock makes that process easier, ergonomically, and it doesnt leak. I like doing...
