Don't know how y'all do it....

The flintlock longrifle is harder for me to shoot offhand. It's longer and heavier than say, my percussion Hawkwn. I do shoot the Hawken better offhand. It has, for me at least, nothing to do with the ignition system and everything to do with weight and length. From a bench or even from a rest...

    Weighing (lead) balls

I have two Callahan bag molds.....that I've used exactly once. Bought for the "just because they're cool" factor. The one time I used them, it was over campfire coals using a ladle. Obviously this ain't the efficient way to cast lots of balls. If I want to start casting my own, what all...

    Load development?

Would you mind posting a pic of or a link to the scale you use to weigh them? That's the next thing i plan to do. I buy them pre-made from a reliable source, but I still look at every one before loading. Rarely, there's an imperfection you can see, which I'm sure would cause a weight difference.

    Load development?

I shoot 5 shot groups at 50yds from a bench for load development. Looking for the tightest group. I change ONE variable at a time, measure the group, write it down/take notes, and shoot again. I swab the barrel between shots to keep fouling consistent. Things/variables to change: -2f or 3f...

    Cleaning in the field

I always thoroughly clean my guns after shooting, and have never had issues. But if I went shooting, couldn't thoroughly clean it but knew I could get to them at home the next day, I would just run a bunch of cleaning patches with moose milk on them up and down the barrel and wipe the rest of...

    Tried Balistol / Water today

I use a 7:1 mix, but I always fire a 40gr fouling shot first and swab between shots. I just dampen a cleaning patch, run it down and up once. I recently won my clubs offhand BP shoot. This is 25yds offhand, 80gr 2f Goex, 7:1 drylubed .018 pillow ticking patch, .490 ball

    Ballistol/water lube

I've found that stored in a zip lock baggie inside a pill bottle, they still shoot well after 6 months. I use a 7:1 mix

Round ball patch size and accuracy

I cut at the muzzle. I think when we're initially working up "the load" for our guns, every variable should be explored, especially vall diameter, patching and patch lube. Every gun has 8ts preferred combination, it's our job to find it. That said, I believe there's an ideal tightness between...

Dixie Gun Works Tennessee Mountain Rifle

I've thought long and hard about having a patch box installed, prob a Bean style. I'm not equipped or experienced enough for that to be a smart DIY project, and good BP gunsmiths don't work cheap. Maybe someday.....

Dixie Gun Works Tennessee Mountain Rifle

IMO, there's nothing wrong with the original lock. The problem is parts....there are virtually none anywhere to replace anything. Absolute unobtainium. Mine was delivered with a broken frizzen. I was able to find another, but had the broken one fixed at a local welding shop. Then the frizzen...

Dixie Gun Works Tennessee Mountain Rifle

I love mine. Its a 1979-80 Miroku made gun. The load MY gun likes best, after LOTS of expiramentation and hours at the range is: -a .495 ball -80gr of Swiss 2f powder -patching is white cotton from Joann Fabrics. It's. 014 in thickness, compresses to .00325(if im reading my micrometer correctly)...

Mr. Flintlock’s Lube and Bore Cleaner

I generally use the Ballistol and water dry lube Dutch Schoultz system, but I swab between shots with homemade moose milk. I find swabbing absolutely necessary with dry lubed patches. When I CANT swab between shots, I use Mr Flintlocks, because you don't really need to. It's good stuff.

Dutch Schoultz : A Mighty Tree Has Fallen In the Forest

So sad. I'm relatively new to this hobby, 4-5 years or so. I consider myself lucky to have corresponded with Dutch, feel fortunate to have a copy of his system. He will be missed.

What makes for a good flintlock cleaning tube clamp?

I have the C clamp style. It works, but I have to get it MEGA tight, and even still, it loosens up/leaks after 15-20 pumps of the cleaning rod. Which is generally enough for me, being as I swab between shots and my bore isn't usually super fouled.

How I lube cut at the muzzle patches

Mr F is my 2nd choice. I really should redo the test. I shot 5 rds at 50 yds from a bench using both the drylubed patches + swabbing and the Mr Flintlocks without swabbing. The drylubed group was about one inch better(1.75" vs @3"). I took emotion out of the equation and let the rifle choose.

How I lube cut at the muzzle patches

I do the dry lube ballistol and water method at the range or hunting. If im on a woodswalk or any other shooting activity where I'm either loading from the bag or not easily able to swab between shots, I use strips pretreated with Mr Flintlocks patch lube. I keep 3-4 rolls in a zip lock bag...

How I lube cut at the muzzle patches

What is your beeswax, lard and ballistol mix? Is the lard just from the grocery store?

    Storage of BP

I keep it in the factory plastic containers in a wood box in the front corner of my attached garage. Is it perfect, no. But no in the house storage is perfect.

Rocks are more reliable than caps

I have both a Flintlock SMR and a inexpensive Hawken percussion. I've never had a problem with either of them going bang. So based on my experience, it's a tie. That said, I've had a frizzen spring snap at the range on my flintlock. Flintlocks do have more moving parts. I get about 25-30 shots...

    Main charge question

160gr kicks, but is manageable for big guys like me. Before getting into sidelocks, I hunted with an scoped inline(still have it, it collects dust). That was before Indiana allowed centerline rifles for deer Firearms season. I shot a 250gr sabot with 150gr of Pyrodex, and that gun doesn't weigh...
