Using car wax as a preservative

If you want a preservative wax stick with Renaissance Wax. It's very effective and proven safe on all sorts of surfaces: metal, wood, bone, stag, pearl, etc., etc. It was specifically designed to preserve museum artifacts and is commonly used by big museums around the world for a variety of...

    Triumphant Jess.

Not bad for a rubbish repro. ;) 😄 Well done to Jess as well. Give her a belly rub for me. :thumb:

    Graff and Sons Mexico Missouri

Interesting. It sounds like they've gone back to Schuetzen after the temporary issues at Goex. Their house brand powder used to be rebranded Schuetzen, then they switched to Goex, then it was announced that Goex was being shut down by Hodgdon. I'm not sure of the current state of Goex under...

    More Brown Bess Questions

#8 (18oz) cotton duck averages around .038". You might buy a yard and experiment with it. edit: btw, have you measured your Bess's bore yet? There is some variation. Many seem to run in the .750-.753" range, while mine (2016 manufacture) mics out at .746". There was a review several years...

    Springfield 1838

I can't help with the markings, but this looks like it could be an 1816 Springfield converted to percussion (definitely a conversion, just not 100% sure on the exact model).

    Brown Bess -Why

That's my Pedersoli Bess in my avatar. I freely admit it was a beauty contest for me and Bess is a much comelier and more elegant lady than her French counterpart. 😍:thumb:

Opinel No. 7, the perfect knife for a possibles bag

I find the #10 and #12 to be my favorite sizes, as I prefer larger folders, though the 6 thru 8 models would indeed make great compact little bag knives.

    French Hunting Sword

Definitely has the 18th century European hunting sword look. Could be French; could be German. I am a sword fan, but my interest ranges from ancient to Renaissance, so this is beyond my knowledge, other than in a very general way.

    Maychlock teaser video.

While managing a piece of burning match out in the field can be a pain, there's something so appealing about the sheer simplicity of the matchlock system.

    10 gauge round ball

I've never tried it, as I haven't owned a SxS muzzleloader, but there's no reason you couldn't do so if you wished. Lots of people have/do load their SxS frontstuffers with balls, whether patched, wadded with tow, etc. As oldwood noted, and based upon my reading on the subject over the years...

India made vs Italian, USA etc, RB accuracy at 50 yds

I agree with those above. I don't think you could get a whole lot better than what you have in terms of accuracy. I went with a Pedersoli Bess over an Indian example for other reasons: genuine walnut stock vs Indian rosewood/teak, better fit and finish, and relatively easily obtained...

    Patch size and Materiel

Cotton canvas "duck cloth" is good and can be found quite cheaply. Thickness is measured in oz. so you'll have to look up a thickness chart that converts oz. to inch measurements. I bought 2 yards last year, one is ~.017" and the other is ~.022" when firmly squeezed in my digital calipers...

Man Who Stole Johann Christian Oerter Rifle Sentenced

I'm just glad the old girl is back on display for all to enjoy. What blows me away is that this guy kept the thing for half a century. I stole a few things as a young kid in a couple moments of idiocy, but I soon 'fessed up and took my punishment, as the guilt didn't allow me to enjoy the...

    Made a mistake (Graphic)

Thanks, Bigpat. It's one thing to describe via the written word why using smokeless in frontstuffers is a bad idea and quite another to see something like this, so this thread will be an excellent reference when such questions are asked in the future. I think/hope this will get the point...
