Sources for octagon to round musket barrels

I have been primarily involved with Colerain barrels, but I wanted something a little longer and slimmer for a Rifle Shoppe build I was doing. The barrel needed to be 46" long and in .62 caliber. I bought a Longhammock barrel from Jim Chambers and I am very satisfied with it. The wood was...

    Quality 1/16 drill bits

Thee are carbide steel bits that will drill through even another drill bit of non-carbide steel. They are useful in drilling vent holes in barrels of very hard steel, like Rayl barrels. They can be purchased from industrial supply companies.

    Looking for a Smoothbore builder

My personal favorite is Mike Miler, maybe because I know him and have watched him work and he has answered all my stupid questions. It has been said that if you order a gun from him, just put away $100 a month and by the time you get your gun you will have the money to pay him. Probably should...

    What happened to Lyman Muzzleloaders?

The coffee was kept at 180 degrees instead of the maximum of 140 that was permitted. The McD had been repeatedly warned by the local restaurant inspectors. They kept it excessively hot so that it could stand for a longer period of time, if necessary, before being served. (This was from a...

    Smoothie Rating

Remember that when TOTW sells a gun, they get 1/3 of the price, so you are looking at a $2000 gun. It is impossible to evaluate a gun from a handful of pictures, and even with more pictures, you still could not evaluate the shaping of the wood and other minute details which separate the well...

To bend your barrel or not that is the question?

I have done it using a steel table (used in building race cars) and some very large c-clamps. I took careful measurements and made sure I got the bend that I wanted. Worked fine.

Need Help to Identify this Flintlock Pistol

600€ is not a lot for an original, so it is probably a reproduction or in some way damaged.

    period correct bags

Each year I shoot a Woods Walk at a club in western NC. The shoot runs up the side of a mountain, has 20 targets and takes about 2 hours to complete. Before I leave the range I have to decide just how much "stuff" I need to carry with me, and it is a LOT less than I would carry at the range...

    Handgonnes

Same here. I went through the matchlock instruction using the Jacob de Gheyn manual along with a number of others and no one ever had a problem.

    4f priming powder...

The only reason I use 4f for priming is because the smaller grains go through the nozzle of my priming horn more easily. And when I am at the range I can only prime (or cap) when on the firing line. So I have a small priming horn I use for that. Any other time I prime with whatever goes down...

    Smoothing a frizzen

Just get it re-soled and it will be fine.

Whoops, I softened a kibler frizzen, how do I repair

Have your frizzen resoled by a good gunsmith. Better than new in most cases.

    Protecting metal under the wood?

I take a block of beeswax, the kind vendors sell at reenactments, and rub down the underside of the barrel. When I remove the barrel after much use, the beeswax is still covering it and there is no rust. This beeswax is also the same stuff they use for candles.

Random photos of famous ML percussion/flint guns, or rather guns owned by either famous people or during famous events

Acutally, the "shot heard round the world" was fired at Lexington, on the village green, by a person unknown. Could have been British, or could have been Colonial (who, at that time, were British also).

    Jack Garner

Welcome. I have one of your rifles from almost 20 years ago that I shoot weekly.

CVA percussion conversion to flintlock ?

Years ago I sent a percussion pistol to CVA and had them convert it to flint. There was no problem.

    Thoughts on long-barreled smoothbores

Works just like in the matchlock drill when loading from chargers.

    Kit recommendations and experiences

The ability to do great woodworking is fine, but knowing how to shape the wood to the correct dimensions is critical. I spent many hours at Martin's Station watching and talking with Mike Miller and others at many events there over the years. I learned a lot. It is necessary to be able to...

For anyone considering an Indian manufactured Flintlock

When I made the decision to move from doing French milice to Compagnies franches de la Marine, I looked for a proper 1728 fusil. There were vendors who came to events selling the India-made guns, and the only other place to get one was the Rifle Shoppe. So I went to Crown Point with money in...
