This is very interesting. Thank you for posting this. It is something that I have not seen before!

.526 Roundball - Who Uses Them?

I have used a .526 round ball during a Woods Walk when my .54 barrel started to foul and get hard to load. I start the walk with .530 and a .015 patch, then go to the .526 as fouling builds and have a .010 patch as a final backup.

Am I installing this nose cap right?

You can also add wood to the end of a stock.

Need recommendation on getting my first flintlock

If you are serious about having a correct gun, rifle or smoothbore, that is accurate to, say 1780, then you can't do it for $1000. Most guns that you see at reenactments are not accurate. So you will have to either spend more or settle for less.

Do i need a custom flintlock rifle??

Over the years I have bought a number of guns. I have only sold one. It is impossible to know where you interest will eventually end up. I do regret not buying three guns when I had the chance. One a copy of an early Dickert, another was a Centermark Fusil, and the third a Larry Williams...

    Best Fusil de Chasse kits

So before you buy, do you want it to be historically correct, or only a good shooting/hunting gun?

Colonial marksmen, via the 'London Paper', circa 1775

Very well put. I wish more of the public attending events could hear this. But it doesn't fit the rhetoric of those in charge.

My new leadslinger should be here today - Party like it's 1777

I don't believe a 1777 had a rear sight. Or a front one for that matter. Only a bayonette lug.

My new leadslinger should be here today - Party like it's 1777

We are talking about the 1777 French fusil, not a smooth rifle. It has no rifle architecture at all.

My new leadslinger should be here today - Party like it's 1777

Thanks. From what I understand rifling is a big deal in Great Britain today. And I am sure that is one of their markets, so it makes me wonder. Still, like some Brit once said, what's in a name? :)

Maybe I am just a little slow, but why to they call it a "rifle"? It's a smoothbore, isn't it? I know the modern French term "fusil" refers to a rifle these days (smoothbore is a fusil de chasse), so maybe it is all in the translation?

Slotted vs non slotted vent liner

Which is why I build my own.

The barrels. Most other issues can be fixed, but once the oversized barrels have been inletted, nothing can be done.

Slotted vs non slotted vent liner

I agree wholeheartedly. There is no need for a vent liner unless the vent is damaged in some way. Unfortunately I have had to install one from time to time. But when I did, I could see no difference between the slotted and plain ones.

    India-made flintlocks

Some years ago I was changing my impression from a French milicien to a member of the Compagnies franches de la Marine, so I needed a proper French military gun. The only place I could find one was from one of the "India-made" vendors at a large event. I went to Ticonderoga, money in hand, to...

    Northwest Trade Gun

I have see India-made guns that have been re-worked and looked much better. But one thing that can't be corrected is the dimensions of the barrel. The outside is not shaped properly and the walls of the barrel are much too thick. Once it is inletted it can't be changed. Not without...

    Frizzen Hardening?

The simple way to get a good frizzen is to avoid the hardening process and simply put a sole on it from the start.

    "rolling artillery"

Just a note about the Thirty Years War (1618-1648): "Under the Swedish warrior Gustavus Adolphus, artillery began to take its true position on the field of battle. Gustavus saw the need for mobility, so he divorced anything heavier than a 12-pounder from his field artillery. His famous...

Nose cap on a Virginia rifle?

If you want to lengthen the stock it is very easy to do. Just select a piece of wood similar in color to the rest and glue it on to the end. Use the barrel to get the correct alignment. Then shape the piece, blend in the color and apply the finish. I have seen entire forestocks replaces and...

    Flintlock Touch Hole

I start off with .065" (1/16), then progress as needed. I have found that .073 to .078 works best for me. This is on larger bore guns from 54 to 69 caliber.
