What you can do with a Cold Steel Frontier Hawk

How did you get the Hickory haft to stain that dark?
  2. Shiloh1944

    More Hawk's

Outstanding! Very nice work. Did you do the engraving and any additional shaping of the hawk heads?

    Latest tomahawk project.

Redmoon, thanks for explaining how you do it and for providing the great photos. :thumb:

    Latest tomahawk project.

Mike, You can get them form Track of the Wolf. I bought a really nice curly Hickory off eBxx but it cost quite a bit. You can also get them on a site called Hatchets and Axes I believe. Redmoon, very nice! What did you use on the haft to get the curl to show up so well? That looks premium...

    My Hawken faddish.

30coupe, It is what it is. After all you don't get a choice when you purchase a GPR rifle kit online. You go with what ever comes in the mail. I believe unless abused or dropped from a distance the rifle will be OK and if it should crack or break I suppose that is the chance you take ordering a...

    Latest tomahawk project.

Here is a top view. DD1, it really isn't all that expensive unless you buy a different haft instead of using the one that originally comes with the hawk, but it is labor intensive. The premium curly Maple, curly Hickory, or other exotic hafts can cost twice as much or more than the original hawk.

    Latest tomahawk project.

I have been wanting to do another tomahawk so before it gets too hot here I decided to customize a Cold Steel spike tomahawk. I have done a few of these in years past but haven't done one in awhile. I thought with all the shutdowns why not. I wasn't sure what I wanted it to look like so I just...

DD1, My pleasure. You have the ability you just needed a nudge and you did outstanding work.:thumb::thumb:

    DOUBLEDEUCE 1's first customized tomahawk.

DOUBLEDEUCE 1 and I have been communicating both here on the forum and via personal email since him seeing my thread on customizing various commercial tomahawks. He decided he wanted to give it a shot himself so after some questions he decided on the CRKT tomahawk to be the one to try his hand...

Attempting to customize a CRKT hammer pole tomahawk.

It was a pleasure communicating with DD1 and his desire and commitment to customize himself a tomahawk is commendable. He thought he could and he did, and in my humble opinion I think he did a fantastic job. DOUBLEDEUCE 1, do you mind if I post a couple of the photos you emailed me so the...

Rate kits on difficulty: TVM, Chambers, Kibler, Pecatonica...

There has been some good advice given on this post that I wish I had known when I did my first ever high-end kit. In my defense I purchased my kit from an individual who had purchased it from TOTW but then decided he wanted to do something different. The kit, a Kit Carson Hawken half stock in...

Attempting to customize a CRKT hammer pole tomahawk.

Again, guys, thanks for all the replies and critiquing both favorable and unfavorable. We all have a right to our opinions and the right to express them. KENT.REICHO, I found the curly hickory haft on eBay. Wasn't cheap either. It is a very nice quality haft that I thought would really set off...

    My Hawken faddish.

Boomerang, Sorry I haven't replied sooner but my attention was drawn to another project after the GPR kit build. Here is the finished rifle.

Does anyone rust blue a hawk

They are both the same styled Cold Steel hawks that I customized.

Attempting to customize a CRKT hammer pole tomahawk.

Thanks gentlemen for the kind remarks. In the past I have customized the Cold Steel hammer pole pipe hawk and use to peddle them on the internet but I don't do it anymore. Folks just don't understand all the work that goes into doing them plus I am now almost 75 and my equilibrium has gone...

Need advise on Lyman GPR flint kit rifle I just completed.

Looks like a saw cut flint to me. Very smooth, even, and squared cuts. It is certainly not napped. Sidney Smith, thanks for the instructional post. Good info. Thanks to everyone for the information. I will make adjustments and go to the range again soon and see if my problems are resolved or...

Need advise on Lyman GPR flint kit rifle I just completed.

Zonie, I read somewhere, can't remember where, that if a flintlock rifle is set up right that there should be very little difference if any in the ignition time as compared to that of percussion rifles. As I said, I read it somewhere but can't remember where. As stated previously I am a novice...

Need advise on Lyman GPR flint kit rifle I just completed.

Zonie, It is a .54 caliber. I will inspect the frizzen to see if there is any gouging. The flint is not razor sharp. Should the flint be adjusted out or pushed as far back in the hammer jaws as possible. I use the leather to hold the flint in the hammer jaws. I will also use a drill bit to...

Need advise on Lyman GPR flint kit rifle I just completed.

The one that came with the kit. I couldn't get it to spark hardly at all so after numerous no sparkings I switched to another one I had that I assume is made of flint. It sparked a little better for awhile and then got to where it wouldn't ignite the powder in the pan either. How much powder do...

Need advise on Lyman GPR flint kit rifle I just completed.

I completed my GPR flint rifle kit a few weeks ago but just haven't had the opportunity to get to the range due to weather conditions. I was able to finally take the rifle out to the range yesterday to see how she performed. I will confess this was my first time in attempting to shoot a...
