Attempting to customize a CRKT hammer pole tomahawk.

Rifleman 1776, I found a curly Hickory haft I have purchased. Boy they sure do like them, but it is a nice long haft that I believe I will be able to fit to this hawk head nicely. Will post a photo when I get it done.

Attempting to customize a CRKT hammer pole tomahawk.

Riflman 1776, I realize you are correct. Tempered Hickory is probably the best. It has a long standing reputation. For my purposes since I do them for my personal collection I have others with Hickory hafts I use more often for the chores I use them for. My hammer pole customized hawks are not...

Attempting to customize a CRKT hammer pole tomahawk.

I inlayed brass wire around the hammer pole.

The CRKT hawk head is ready to fit to a haft. I think instead of the hickory one that came with the hawk I believe I will order a premium curly Maple haft and fit it to this head.

So far about 10 hours, but the hawk head is only about 1/3rd done.

Attempting to customize a CRKT hammer pole tomahawk.

Well, I have customized the Cold Steel and Condor pipe hammer pole hawk so I thought why not do the Columbia River Knife and Tool (CRKT) tomahawk as well. As you can see by the photos it does not have the set screw. It is composed of 1055 carbon steel the same as the Cold Steel hawks. Thankfully...

    Customizing another new tomahawk

jrmflintlock, I have not seen any curly Ash hafts already fashioned and ready to be fitted, only Hickory and Maple. I have seen some Rosewood hafts but I am sure they were not ready made hafts that just needed fitting. Just do an internet search for tomahawk handles and you will get several...

    Customizing another new tomahawk

Recently I purchased a new tomahawk to customize. It is a Condor Tool & Knife Indian hammer pole. After purchasing and customizing the Condor tomahawk I do not think it is a better hawk than the Cold Steel hawks I have used in the past especially when it is twice the price. Also, extra work is...

    Customizing another new tomahawk

Brokennock, I believe this a one of my customized Cold Steel trail hawks I did several years ago. smo, no, Naval jelly does not work. necchi, I have used cold blue before but the last several I have done I have used Berchwood Casey's browning agent. I heat the hawk head in the oven to...

    Customizing another new tomahawk

Thank you for the kind replies. I tried on this last customized Cold Steel hawk to hold back on the embellishments. I had some express they thought my customizing was somewhat over the top and made the hawks look more ceremonial than common use even though they are all fully functional. I have...

    Customizing another new tomahawk

Here is the one I just finished that I originally began this thread with. I finally received and fit the premium curly Maple haft I had special ordered.

    Customizing another new tomahawk

You can either weld up the set screw hole, leave it, or over lay it with brass. If you friction fit the haft properly to the hawk head the set screw is totally unnecessary. It can be left out or screwed in if you want it or as I said welded up or overlayed so it cannot be seen as with this...

    Customizing another new tomahawk

These are some from the past. I am also currently customizing a Condor hawk but not sure if I think they are any better than Cold Steel and they are twice as expensive.

    Customizing another new tomahawk

I had some folks express they thought my hawks were too fancy. They said they look too much like a ceremonial piece instead of everyday use, so I tried to tone it down a bit from previous tomahawk projects. I couldn’t help myself though and did the one brass wire inlay around the bowl on the...

    Customizing another new tomahawk

I have over the last 4 or 5 years customized a number of Cold Steel tomahawks. This is my latest. I still have to blue/brown it and redo the haft so it is a project still in progress. I am also customizing a Condor but I am currently waiting to get the Makers marks welded up because they are...

    Throwing hawks

Both Rifleman 1776 and tenngun are probably correct about your throwing hawk if fancy would be a target. I never suggested my hawk was embellished for throwing although it could be. I too would use something I didn't spend a lot of time working on and didn't want destroyed. My embellished...

    Throwing hawks

50 cal.cliff, This is one that I embellished. Probably not period correct but sure made it look prettier, if pretty is your thing. I just like making them different. [/img] [/img] [/img]
