Fun True Story from this weekend

This weekend was the KY early muzzleloader season. We were hunting some private property that is easiest to access through public hunting ground, and not bump deer from their beds. I was loaded down with the 54 flinter and primitive dress (plus the lovely hunter orange requirement). As we pull...

Importance of Shot Placement vs Power

95% of all bullets we recover from deer go completely through the deer and stop at hide on far side. But I agree double lung is better than one lung. And yes damage and wound channel are very important. Like 75% of the guides I know will not allow hunters to use a 6.5 creed because it makes a...

Importance of Shot Placement vs Power

There has been lots of talk about killing deer etc with 32, 36, 40, 45 - 72 Cal roundballs etc. Yes all will kill if shot was taken from a decent distance and hit in the vitals. Blood Trails will always vary regardless of caliber or charge. As a guy who processes over 1000 deer a year I see all...

Issues with .36 rifle cleaning jags

You can not run standard size cleaning patches - you have to buy the smaller size cleaning patches designed for 32/36 cals.

My trade gun has a 36" barrel and its really nice in the woods.

    Why a Fowler

Get the fowler. You can hunt everything with it you listed. You might just get bit by the smoothbore bug and not need the rifle later it happens a bunch. A .600 round ball will kill anything if hit in vital area. And you can hunt turkeys to doves with it too. For all purpose fowler I run 62/20...

Am I the only one who doesn’t really care for carving on a rifle stock?

There is a fine line between elegant and over the top. I see some rifles that have so many inlays it looked like my local tattoo artist. I like a few tastefully done carvings and engraving. Although I have a rifle with tons of inlays, carving and wire work its not my favorite cosmetically, but...

Flintlock or percussion for a first purchase?

Good thing about the Pedersoli I can be easily swapped back and forth from percussion to flint and back again. The parts are currently available to do it. Like many others I started with percussion, however I too went to mostly flintlocks. A smoothbore just scre3ams flintlock they go together...
