Has the shortage of Modern Ammo Caused a Resurgence in Black Powder Shooting?

I haven't noticed a bump at my local range, but I usually shoot BP about every third trip. Same for .22. I try to limit my use of unobtanium ammo these days.

    Advice on first kit

I was very pleased with my Pedersoli Hawken .50 kit. The inletting was done very well. Building the kit was mainly minor wood shaping/finishing and polishing the brass. It's a great shooter and within your price range. Whatever you choose, best of luck.

    Conversion to flint

I have a Pedersoli Harpers Ferry 1805 percussion that I would like to convert to flint, assuming I can find a lock. Does anyone know if the existing barrel can be used without permanent modifications? I'd like to be able to switch back and forth.

    Opinion on Hawken kits

Sounds like a great project; I'd like to hear how it turns out.

    Cleaning new Brown Bess

It may not always work, but I had a stubborn patch that just would not budge. I dropped about 5 grains of BP down the bore and shot the patch out. It went about 10 feet. I had tried the patch worm and couldn't grab it. I think it got down in the patent breech area. Good luck!

    Those pesky Pedersoli Patent (Breeches)

Here's another way to skin the cat. I use a .22 bore brush with a patch wrapped around it to clean the breech, followed by one with alcohol, then one with Barricade. Easy and seems to work well.

    Staining rough sawn pine

I made a rustic mantle from an old cypress beam and finished it with walnut Briwax. Simply rub in with a cloth until the wood won't accept any more. Turned out great. You may want to give it a try. I have since used it on unfinished antique furniture with similar good results. Good luck.

    "Easy to learn on" kits?

I've built a couple of Pedersoli rifles and can recommend them, if you want a middle of the road option. They required only minor wood shaping (rasp, sand, scraper), finishing and polishing of brass hardware. I got both from Dixie Gun Works. Best of luck, whichever you choose.

    Percussion rifle cleaning info please

I also use warm water with a few drops of Dawn dish detergent and pump the solution back and forth. I use a .22 caliber bronze brush with a patch wrapped around it to swab the patent breech area. Patches with rubbing alcohol to remove water, followed by Barricade to prevent rust. Good results...

Patch stuck at bottom of barrel

A small caliber bore brush (like a .22) will catch and retrieve a patch. Once, at the range, I dropped about 5 grains of BP down the barrel and shot the errant patch out.

Cleaning the Thompson Center "patent breech?"

My Pedersoli has the patent breech also, and I have found a .22 bronze brush with a patch wound around it will clean that area nicely. That's after flushing with warm water/Dawn detergent to get most of the crud out.

    New Member

Welcome; I'm fairly new to muzzle loaders as well and I agree, they are a lot of fun. Not sure about your trigger question. I shoot only round ball with a lubed patch. For me, 25 yds would be about as far as I would have much chance of accuracy. Best of luck!

Recommendation for first build by newbee

Another you might consider is Pedersoli. I built one of their Scout .50 cal rifles in flintlock, but I believe it is also available in caplock. It required minor wood shaping (rasp, sandpaper, scraper) and finishing. Spent a bit of time polishing the brass parts. I ordered from Dixie Gun Works...

    pedersoli scout

I recently built one from a kit; mostly minor wood shaping and metal polishing. It's the flintlock version, light and fun to shoot. I think you'll like it.

    Advice for a newbie

I recently completed a Pedersoli Harpers Ferry pistol kit. The inletting was pretty close, with only a minor amount of shaping required. I used a chisel, fine rasp and sandpaper. I probably spent twice as much time polishing the brass than on the woodwork. It turned out nice and shoots well...

Shooting the percussion Harper's Ferry pistol

I just put one of these together from a kit and it's really fun to shoot. I was surprised by how quick it is to load and how accurate it is. Good shooting there; enjoy.

    Holster for Harpers Ferry pistol

I recently got a Pedersoli .54 cal Harpers Ferry pistol. I'm having trouble finding a full holster or scabbard for it. Any suggestions? I'm mainly looking for something to use for transport, not storage.

First Experience with Deer Stalker Flintlock

I was having problems with delayed ignition. I discovered (after reading here) using a pick through the touch hole to create a channel into the main charge. Makes a world of difference. Also, dress the flint so it throws a good shower of sparks. Lots of other tips to be found here. Good luck and...

    32 caliber accessories

I get #11 caps at Bass Pro. There are several on-line sources, but these are subject to the hazmat fee.
