    Proof Hawken made a flint

its clearly a converted flinter, look at the holes in the front of the lock for the frizzen and spring. the rifle clearly has a drum and originally was a flintlock for sure. the trigger guard and butt plate are hawken type and I was told (did not personally see) it was marked.

    Proof Hawken made a flint

I think from the general pattern it is clearly a J&S rifle, maybe even from St Louis. it has a 38" barrel and its about 52 caliber

    Proof Hawken made a flint

other than the full stock, and lack of snail breach, its clearly in the Hawkens brother's style

    Proof Hawken made a flint

it must be earlier than the rifle I have pictures of, it looks like an eastern longrifle with no plains features.

    Proof Hawken made a flint

I actually have pictures of an original flint Hawken with characteristics of the plains rifles, except it is full stocked. it is not in a museum its privately owned. The owner of the Hawken Shop in St Louis, MO sent them to me when I was trying to build a PC Hawken, but really wanted it in...

    Building yet another NW gun

Thank you very much, at least I have a shot at it, and that's a lot better than I had

    Building yet another NW gun

I don't do face book or any of the common social media things, just forums, no good comes from social media, any contact info would be awesome, you have no idea how many times I went down the rabbit hole looking for a lefty sideplate, my next option was going to be scan one with a 3d scanner...

    Building yet another NW gun

I have been building and shooting since the early '70s. started with CVA kits, moved on to raw parts and all the right hand guns are now relighted to mothballs. I have pretty bad hearing loss from shooting in my youth without hearing protection, back then it wasn't a thing. now I hunt...

    Building yet another NW gun

do you have contact info, I have wanted a trade gun for years, but being a lefty made it really hard to build, I can use a L&R left hand Queen Ann lock, the barrel is ambi but that darn sideplate, I just could not find one.

    Building yet another NW gun

I have been wanting to build one for a long time, there is just one part I can't find. Since I am a southpaw, it seems impossible to find a left hand side plate. is there even such a thing?

    Oil finish on a stock.....

(yes, I'm a southpaw) its not a reversed image. it dries pretty fast goes deep and is quite hard the old timer that taught me used Kerosene, but that was too hard to find, Coleman fuel was easy to get, and actually works better.

    Oil finish on a stock.....

I have been finishing stocks since the mid 70s, the best finish I have ever used is linseed oil with a touch of coleman fuel added

how would you guys fix this.

I started building CVA kit guns back in the early 70s. I ran into every twisted, bent warped and crooked part imaginable.... thus began my quest for tools. I no longer built kit guns, but the tools make it possible to build custom guns, invest in proper tools!

    Blowing down the barrel

last time I was out hunting, I didn't have a CO2 tank, or fancy hook, just a ball puller in my bag that screws into my ramrod. sometimes we just have to make do with what's at hand. also had to pee down the barrel to clean it because there was nothing else available out in the woods. and I am...

    Blowing down the barrel

not to mention pulling a stuck ball! not only loaded, but barrel obstructed as well, and you screw in a ball puller, and yank with all your might to get the ball out. how much of your body is exposed at that point.

    Blowing down the barrel

SO.... it can't go off uncapped or with the frizzen open when you swab, but it can when you blow down the barrel interesting ... and those of us who cup our hands over the barrel and blow in that way are at risk more so than those who put their hands over the muzzle to swab, not sure I follow...

    Blowing down the barrel

just curious ... How exactly do you run a patch down the barrel without putting any part of your body over the muzzle? unless your ramrod is some new fangled thing with an off set grip.

Questions for the guys that can "shoot all day" without swabbing

I never swab between shots, I use pillow ticking, no lube. I put the patch in my mouth while measuring my powder (only Black, and if not Goex, then homemade). My ball rams home easy, no fouling issues, probably because I blow down the barrel right after the shot to moisten the fouling and load...
