    casting question

I cast with a breeze at my back. as for your mask you are fine to wear it. viruses have a limited time frame where they are active. Covid 19 is listed as lasting up to 3 days on a hard surface.

    Carrying Heavy Revolvers

a dragoon is not the other extreme to a NAA revolver but a revolving carbine is. like the Remington 1866 or colt root. or putting a detachable stock on a long barrel 1858 or 1851.

Colonial Williamsburg powder storage and memory

also powder that gets damp can form clumps. rolling it around would break up the clumps.

    First blank build

it would work but just like a dremel it would not take long to ruin things if you loose focus.

    First blank build

the absolute hardest part is to slow down and do the task at hand as correct as you can manage.

Cherry wood for a stock…good or bad

it works really well but is not the best for carving. to darken just leave out in sunlight. a lot of people really like it.

Question about a site to buy parts for a first build

I have bought parts from many different companies. Pecatonica is good but the prices listed on the website might not be accurate. the log cabin shop is reputable as well. personally my three go to shops are Track of the wolf, dixie gun works, and muzzleloader builder supply. if you plan to build...

    Builder classes / instruction

if you watch videos I would recommend Bill Raby, grumpy gunsmith of Williamsburg, homemade history, duelist 1954. in the latest issue of muzzle blast, I see classes listed from mike brooks flintlocks, parker firearms, jack brooks longrifles, and the NMLRA offers classes as well. most of the...

    The did you ever thread......

Had my underhammer get stuck at half **** when target shooting. my finger slipped off the trigger when I was messing with it and put a round ten feet in front of the target. in shame I packed up and went home glad no one was around to be endangered by my stupidity. should have taken the cap off...

Sounds like a scam, please advise

what is your thread for the nipples? dixie gun works sells one that uses small pistol primers and Mag spark makes something that uses 209 primers. it might be easier to get primers from a local source.

    Excessive Caliber Syndrome (ECS)

    I just love having options. these are just conical molds for my 36 cal revolver. for round balls I got .240, .311, .323, .330, 375, .390, .433, .440, .445, .454 .562, 575, .680, and a .818 on the way. I thought I had just black powder syndrome but I guess I got ECS too.

    Relative strength between percussion models

No I am saying that was an intentional part of the design. Colt was one of the leaders when it comes to developing interchangeable parts but all of his guns still required hand fitting by gunsmiths as the manufacturing was nowhere near the ability to hold the tolerances people are accustomed to...

    Relative strength between percussion models

they are both adequate for the forces applied to them. I prefer the open tops as they are easier to clean. I for one see the "short arbors" as a feature not a bug. lets you set the barrel gap and in the design the wedge is an intentional wear point that is easy to replace.

Controlling color and shade on fancy maple

I got the same dark finish with aqua fortis. next time I am going to try and dilute it like the instructions say and use tung oil instead of bolied linseed oil. still looks great even when it is dark.
