Carrying Heavy Revolvers

I used to carry a Colt Dragoon 2nd model in a flap holster on my belt. IMO its a great if you are riding a horse most of the time. My leather was top quality and that bugger sagged my britches like a champ!

A Bianchi X-15 shoulder holster intended for an 8-3/8" S&W Model 29 works for carrying a Walker concealed. Not that I do, but I have tried it out.

Is it possible to carry a Walker concealed ? I would think it about as easy as carrying a small anvil concealed !

I was thinking shoulder holster also. I should think it would be concealable in a shoulder holster.

A trained eye or a tailor can spot the bulge even with a suit that's been cut to conceal it. Quasimodo might be able to cover it.

Sam Brown belts come to mind, thinking back to old cop days. Not in style, perhaps, but they kept your britches from falling down.

a dragoon is not the other extreme to a NAA revolver but a revolving carbine is. like the Remington 1866 or colt root. or putting a detachable stock on a long barrel 1858 or 1851.

Dragoons are nice and fun to shoot. I prefer to shoot mine supported on a bench otherwise feels heavy. Can’t imagine having a 4.5 pound brick hanging on ones belt!

The only cap and ball pistol I have is the little NAA Super Companion. I've thought about going the opposite extreme and getting a Walker or Dragoon. Can they be carried comfortably in a belt hoster or are they too cumbersome? Are there other options like a pouch or scabbard of some kind? Thanks

I have found,for me anyways, a nice cross draw holster for longer barrels (7 1/2-8”) and a strong side holster for 5” or shorter seems to be the most comfortable. Now for my dragoon, it’s a hunting style shoulder holster all the way!

Don't know if it helps or not, but my Dad grew up during the tail end of the 'Old West', (he was born in 1903) in Indian Territory, (now Okla.) He recalled, to me, once, that some of the much older men still carried C&B revolvers, some being Walkers and Dragoons. According to him, the Walker, at least came with a holster looped, not for belt wear, but to fit over a saddle horn. Thus, as was previously stated in this forum, the name 'horse pistol' was used to describe them.

They do make some IWB holsters for 1873 style revolvers. The regular length 1858 etc REM style revolvers fit OK in the holsters too. The only thing I would do is add a leather back to them so that the handgrip doesn’t dig in to your side and to minimize sweat from damaging the gun. I am pudgy enough and large enough to carry one IWB.

Depends on what you are willing to carry or how strong you are. There is a good piece of advice in the movie the 13th warrior, when Antonio Banderas is handed a Viking battle sword, he said "I can't lift this", the viking who handed it to him said, " Grow Stronger ". We are not made out of dead wood, as long as we have breath in us we can improve. We can get stronger both mentally and physically. So if you want to carry and accurately shoot a heavier revolver go right ahead and do it, just prepare.

Possible with a heavy winter jacket over top
