    Well, now I've done it!

Rain finally quit and the wind died down to about 7-10 mph so....................... off to the range for a few test fire shots. The gun shot great (better than me). I am no crack shot with open sights. It was shooting pretty good at 25 yards. First three shots with a new gun. I found that it...

    Well, now I've done it!

Damn! It is raining and windy (25 mph +). Supposed to rain all day. Looks like maybe a window around 8pm tonight. I may run on over and try to shoot it then.

    Well, now I've done it!

Well, it's all together now. This is my first rifle build other than a couple of cheap CVA and other kit guns back in the 70's. I learned a lot and made and fixed a few mistakes but I am happy with it. I think it turned out really nice. Think if it isn't raining too much tomorrow, I will go out...

    Help finding barrel

I have been having the opposite thoughts. I have an old CVA (I think) with a decent stock but always hated the two piece thing. I was thinking of getting a plain pre carve and using the barrel and parts to make something else.

Which oil after browning a barrel?

I could have browned a barrel three times since this thread started. But I only did one plus all the other metal parts on my SMR including the patch box I decided on at the last minute after the barrel and others were done and oil treated. (10-40) :ghostly:

    Well, now I've done it!

Update. I cleaned the stock by scrubbing with alcohol. It came clean. After testing several different methods and types of stain and application, I decided to go with TOW Aqua Fortis and Tru Oil finish. I have used Tru Oil before and had good results with it. The Aqua Fortis was a new one for...

    1st time browning question

Exactly. If you see rust pits, it's gone too far. Take steel wool (cleaned ) or a new Scotch Brite pad and smoothit out even if some of it goes to the bare metal. You just want a reddish haze. Then while running it in warm water, wipe it with a coarse cloth. Here are the two barrels I have done...

    Well, now I've done it!

Thanks. I hope mine comes out that nice. One question I have is, there is some blueish color in the curl from handling the stock. Not sure if it's from the Prussian blue from inletting or metal dust from handling the metal parts. Is there a way to get it off or out of the grain? Or will it be...

    Well, now I've done it!

Barrel and metal parts are browned. Today I inlet the patch box. I thought the banana patch box was too long so I cut it off and re shaped it. Waiting for the spring and latch I ordered to finish the mortise. It's about a half inch deep now.

Which oil after browning a barrel?

LMF browning solution. Baking soda bath and 10-40 motor oil for 24 hours. Haven't waxed it but plan to.

    Banana Patchbox Latch

Which oil after browning a barrel?

I just remembered something. On the last barrel, I took a heat gun and warmed up the barrel with the oil on it a couple of times during the 24 hrs. I don't know if it helped absorb more or not. It was during a colder time of year. I don't think I need to this time.

Which oil after browning a barrel?

It's magic. Not sure how or why it helps but I did it on another barrel and it seems like a tough finish. I do wipe it with gun oil every time I clean it but don't leave it slick.

Which oil after browning a barrel?

When I used the oven this am for the misc. parts, I set it on the lowest setting which was 170 degrees. well over the 130 degrees recommended. I only left them in there until they got too hot to pick up with my calloused bare hands.

Which oil after browning a barrel?

125 to 130 degrees. 1250 to 1300 would be glowing and the oil would burst into flames.

    Banana Patchbox Latch

Which oil after browning a barrel?

Mine's in 10-40 right now. Worked on the last one. Put all the misc. parts in an old square pan an warmed them up in the oven on low. the poured oil on them and brushed it in the tight spots. The barrel I heated up with a torch until it was hot to the touch and poured oil on a rag and slopped it on.
