    How to “harden” leather?

Well unfortunately that all makes sense. Of course I knew leather was skin but didn’t think about the “bursting cells” part. With that said they’re certainly are synthetic ways to toughen it up I would think. Let the science continue!

    No Such Rifle !

Well. Just did a rifle kit where I had to form and finish the stock and take a file to metal parts to clean them up. Was feeling a little cocky about my skill and how nice it turned out. Thanks for bringing me down earth again! :)

    Citristrip and wood stocks…

Last bit of follow-up. It would appear I did, in fact, finally(!) manage to get all the BLO out of the wood. It can be done… and hopefully I’ll never do it again. Pic after the first (and probably only) coat of stain with excess wipe off with dry rag but before a mineral spirit wipe.

    How to “harden” leather?

Thanks for the additional. I’ve found about 4 or 5 methods for removing oil from leather from the, always reliable and trustworthy, internet from easy and safe (warm water and Dawn) all the way to harsh (acetone) so we have a few things to try before hardening. And in all this reading - and...

    How to “harden” leather?

Now this is interesting. Guess I always thought of leather like a more complex fabric. It may stain like fabric but oil can be, at least partially, removed and then “toughened” up by the above methods. Well I am kind of the original “mad scientist” in these matters and not afraid to try some...

    How to “harden” leather?

Based on looks alone, comparing it to my other known stuff, I think its vegetable tanned. It is thick like a good sturdy belt. And I mightily appreciate the offer Richard but my experience level with leather is minimal, though I like to think of myself as handy, and I planned nothing fancy or...

    How to “harden” leather?

    Perfect! Thank you gentlemen!

    How to “harden” leather?

And I know little about leather so forgive me if this is a stupid question. Acquired some leather for free that is quite soft and supple I think, by feel, by the use of oil…? Have some flintlock related projects I’d like to try with it but a stiffer leather would be nicer. Doesn't have to shave...

BLO rambling and thanks to Loyalist Dave…

Done a lot of stocks over the years with straight BLO per “all the books and knowledge” putting it on and using whatever dry and wipe time is on the label. My latest stock (which started as bare wood) I’ve done exclusively with a trick learned here (from Loyalist Dave) is mixing BLO with...

    Tighter the better for PRB?

Yea. I need to stop goofing and up my accuracy game once in a while.

    Citristrip and wood stocks…

Well I spent a lot of time, elbow grease, and chemicals on this thing for over a week and I really think I am at bare wood finally. Next is stain. With that said I don’t plan to repeat this again in the future!

Baker rifle by Persersoli. Any news?

Ahh. I wasn’t aware of Pedersoli’s checkered past in saying things are gonna happen but didn’t. Or producing a bad product. Mine seem to be gold. Well I ain’t losing sleep. Got plenty of their other military smoothbore replicas to keep me busy. Baker was just the frosting on the cake. And if I...

Price Increase coming for Pedersoli Firearms

Agreed on the rifling part though I’m sure it will be. I forgot to ask Pedersoli this (just assuming I guess) but they are certainly no strangers to rifled products. The whole point for me is that it is rifled. Need a “sniper” to join my smoothbores. 😁 The Indian repros are not I’ll guess for...

Baker rifle by Persersoli. Any news?

FWIW Pedersoli has said point blank that they are making one for release in 2023. Whether the stars align and it actually happens is yet to be determined!

    Citristrip and wood stocks…

Think I’m ready for the final light sanding today before staining. An additional bonus of sanding (which I always do anyway) will be to remove any residue left by scraping and solvent wipes on the large flat surfaces. In regards to all the holes and nooks and crannies liberal flushing with...

    Citristrip and wood stocks…

Its out now I believe but I was wondering about the removing the residue. My normal stuff is “Strypeez” and the residue is like dried…snot but it seemed easy to clean from all the holes and crannies. Citristrip leaves a white powder which I reckon will just take more elbow grease. Was hoping for...

    Citristrip and wood stocks…

Giving it a little more (perhaps hopeful) thought I think the white powder is part of the gelling agent and the acid has evaporated….hopefully. Still gonna work on it though. Just got done flushing solvent in the holes and hidden areas. And you are not the first to tell me how public use...

Anyone have a TRS Baker flintlock rifle?

Thanks for the pic. I guessed what was meant by “gates on the metal” but its nice to see it. Was the barrel exterior polished?

    New UPS Regs

I talked to a UPS employee who mentioned this (upcoming?) change to me and said it was courtesy of the new “woke” CEO. Anyway he had received correspondence on the policy and, like the OP, said it was very confusing about what exactly they were doing. My impression was firearms could be...
