    Flashguard

I had a flash guard on my Pedersoli Bess. It's OK if you are shooting blanks, but if you are doing shooting roundball, I found that the blow back tended to damage my glasses. I still have the flash guard but now it's in the shooting box, not on the gun.

    Shipping a long rifle

Build a shipping case out of PVC pipe with a solid plug on one end and a screw on cap on the other. If you are worried about security, drill a hole through the screw cap and use a padlock.

    Patched iron balls?

I have shot ball bearings out of a smoothbore on rare occasions. They shoot well and because they are lighter than lead and perfectly smooth they shoot dead on at 100 yards. If you wanted to shoot ball bearings out of a rifle you would probably want to use a leather patch instead of cloth. A...

Filler in a single shot pistol ?

I have been shooting a LePage for years and never seen a need for anything other than Powder, Patch, Ball. There can be a need for filler in revolvers if you are loading a reduced load, but the LePage is not a revolver.

    Help choosing a horn

I have made all my own horns. I make them to suit me. I do reenact but I live fire a lot more so safety is paramount. I always put a spring loaded brass valve on my horns because it's difficult to always remember to put the plug back in the horn. I really don't want a spark setting off a...

    Revolver chain fires

I had a few chain fires with my Remingtons. A few extra pops and extra recoil is all it amounts to. I discarded the original factory nipples and replaced them with new stainless steel ones from Track of the Wolf. That ended the chain fires. I load with a greased wad under the ball and no...

Federal smoothbores at Gettysburg, Jul. 1863

In Grant's Memoirs I remember reading that after Vicksburg fell the Confederate forces stacked arms and marched out. The Federal forces then stacked their smooth-bored muskets and marched in and rearmed themselves with new Enfields. The Enfields had slipped past the blockade and had been...

    Pedersoli Bess Accuracy?

In competition at Friendship, I have never seen anyone shoot an Indian made Bess, so I can't tell you how accurate they are. Regarding the Pedersoli Bess accuracy, the best shooters can score an 11 of 18 on the Woodswalk. Basically they are able to keep the hits in a paper plate at 40 yards.

    Walnut stocks

I always understood that the reason Black Walnut was used in US Military gunstocks is that it machined easier. Maple can be difficult to cut quickly on a duplicating lathe but Black Walnut is much easier.

    Lead ball casting

Just for your information. Lead from old car batteries is alloyed with Arsenic and other poisonous items to improve it's use as a battery. I recommend that you not go that route. There are large companies that refine battery lead. They heat the lead to a gaseous state and then run it through...

    Appalachian Bear Pistols

I'm not sure whether long barreled "Bear Pistols" are really a thing or not. They are currently being built by a number of living gunsmiths, but I don't recall having ever seen an original like that. However, you are building it for yourself for your own use and not to play in the HC/PC game...

    Pedersoli Brown Bess Carbine

I find that it is impossible to get the jaws of the **** tight enough using the screw driver slot. Drill a hole through the ball at the top big enough that a steel rod can be inserted. Then use the rod to tighten down the jaw. You'll find you can get another full turn or two after you have...

    Aiming a Brown Bess?

Most smoothbore rules don't allow a rear sight above the plane of the barrel. That means that grooves in the tang are OK. Also, you can file down the bayonet lug about half way and cut a groove in the middle of the lug. Solder a small front sight in the groove. I used a lucky penny that I...

    Blackley Queen Anne pistol

I have a couple Jeff Tanner moulds in odd sizes. All of them throw perfect roundball. I really like the way the brass moulds heat up fast.

    Pedersoli Brown Bess Carbine

I bought my Bess Carbine used back in the 90s. I have put thousands of rounds through it since. Had to replace the Frizzen twice when the thin Pedersoli hardening wore through. It was easier and cheaper to buy a new Frizzen from Dixie than it was to reharden the metal. The flash guard really...

Wearing glasses is always a good idea as well. They don't have to be fancy.

What's your favorite sight in target

Paper plates with a big black dot in the middle work well for me for up close work. I mix a little spit and black powder on the plate and smear it around until I have a dot the right size.

What's the farthest you've ever shot with a long rifle?

I was wondering if you were still in the Land of the Long White Cloud. The Widowmakers are still doing fine. About 125 members or so.

    Charles Moore Flintlock Target Pistol

The Pedersoli Website has recommended target loads for all their blackpowder guns. My flint pistol would shoot their recommended load but I needed a 4# beater to get the ball down the bore. You might want to experiment with different size ball.
