    J. Henry & Son lock problem

Just received word today that the lock off of my J. Henry & Son rifle is beyond any reasonable repair. Would anybody have an idea where I could find a replacement lock or a lock that could be made to work on this rifle. It’s a .30 cal. percussion rifle.

Probably won’t but we needed something to discuss this morning

    Round ball spin.

Question this morning at the coffee shop about round ball spin. Does a round ball out of a rifled barrel spin on one axis only or will it “tumble”? Reason for asking is we are discussing putting a hollow point type of hole in a round ball. I know this is probably a worthless idea but it is a...

Thanks for the information. Got to fire the rifle 3 times and the bridle broke. The lock is now at Cabin Creek awaiting repair.

    Ordered a cap making tool

I use .005” copper shim stock. Any local machine shop would probably have it. Makes a perfect cap. Put the compound in the cap and add 2 drops of acetone and press tissue paper down on top of the compound with the proper size drill bit and let set for 24 hrs. I tried a lot of different methods...

    Goex (again 😀 )

I spent a lot of time with my BP firearms working up a load for each one of them (15) using Goex powder. While it was enjoyable doing so I just enjoy shooting them now without working up loads. Not by chance I have enough Goex (I hope) to last me until it is back on the shelf. When it comes...

    Making #11 caps

Find a local machine shop and get some .005” copper shim stock. Makes a perfect cap. If they don’t have copper brass will do.

    Home made caps

Found some .0055 copper. Perfect. Cut 24 caps and they all came out perfect. Shouldn’t ever run out of caps now.

    Home made caps

While the double layer of Pepsi can works fine I tried using an aluminum pie pan. Tried it single and double layer. The double is best but the caps were not as consistent as the Pepsi can. Will try some copper sheet next as soon as I find some. To those who have used the copper, did you use a...

    Home made caps

Using the tissue paper is the answer. Works great and no spillage of compound after drying. I have made a fixture out of wood to hold the caps while I fill them and cut the tissue paper. No more using needle nose pliers to hold the caps. And they go boom on the pistol. I think I have got this...

    Home made caps

I also doubled the can material and that worked great. Also have a batch drying that I used the tissue paper in. I like that method of sealing the compound. Will find out in the morning how well that works.

    Home made caps

Will definitely give that a try. Cutting discs is kind of tedious.

    Home made caps

Found out that the binder in the kit doesn’t work very well as mentioned earlier in post. I decided to try super glue as a sealer. That didn’t work out at all. Lol. This morning was talking to a shooting buddy about this project and he mentioned using a paper disc over the charge. I used my...
