That's only half the story. in what locks?

    Does agate "damage" a frizzen?

I have seen cut flints chew through the TC frizzens case hardeneing. It is more a factor of lock geometry. Does the agate edge arc down against the frizzen the way a flint should or does it just bash into it. TC's early locks were bashers. OTH, I had a Curly Gostomski built North Star...

    Cheapest pistol kit?

CVA Pistols, except for the trapper and the Hege-Siber, never had a bridle or fly in the lock. The TC patriot was always an over priced piece. The original 45 caliber barrels were lousy shooters. I had one that I replaced the barrel and put better sights on it. Then it could shoot.

    Cheapest pistol kit?

there are hundreds of CVA pistols (both colonial and kentucky) out there where the kit builder never even sanded the ridges off the stock properly. I have picked them up for $75 to $150. Re working and customizing such kits can result in a much better gun than factory finished. I no longer...

    Water Buffalo horn - cheap

I have been tinkering with some scrimshaw and other small items., looking for various materials and such. I was at dollar tree yesterday and in the pet section, they had solid black 3 inch sections of water buffalo horn for $1.25 each. They are in plastic pouches hanging on pegs. I have...

    Miquelet lock rifle and pistol

CVA sold some PROOF TESTED miquelet lock guns in the early 1970's All Spanish made guns that are intended to be fired, would have a proof test mark somewhere. It's their law, except for kits.

where to find musket nipple to fit TC Hawkin 50 cal.

That has been debated, besides which, standard No 11 caps, brass Italian caps, or the "magnum" caps that have been sold for the last 30 years? I find all the hoopla kind of ironic, since I used No. 11 caps on my Zoave musket for decades. Zoli included both nipples with it's guns. back...

Wanting a piece of wood turned.

I hope he can help you out. I also hope you are not using a round poll. Too much possibility for the head to twist sideways n the handle. The shape should at least be slightly oval, or like most hawk handles, tear drop shaped. I belong to a beginner black smith group and those guys make...

Wanting a piece of wood turned.

all kinds of handles are tuned on a lathe. Most commercial hawk handles have both a taper and an oval cross section that slowly progresses to a tear drop cross section at the poll. I have been a wood turner for years. Turning such an item is an art that is now done mostly on cnc machines...

    Old style deep rifling

When I was just getting started, I went to lots of the local matches in the Maryland and Pennsylvania area. Many were camp over weekend matches. Especially on Saturday nights, many of the old timers would gather around a camp fire. Besides a few stories and tall tales, one of the things that...

    Old style deep rifling

That may be true. I was at a match once at Harrisburg Hunters and Anglers back around 1980 and people were such Dicks that they would intentionally shoot his target to try to disqualify his target. So he and I swapped targets. He would put mine up and I would put his up. two positions over...

    Old style deep rifling

Nope most accurate barrels are closer to .010 or .012 depending on the width and shape of the grooves. H&H made special choked rifle barrels that had rifling that was like an oval laid on it's side with grooves 4 or 5 times wider than the lands. No square edges and grooves that were deeper...

    Old style deep rifling

I had a 54 caliber barrel by an unknown maker. Cut rifling was indeed 20 thousandths deep, with 8 or 10 grooves and lands slightly wider. This rifling was all the way to the breech plug. It was impossible to shoot without using an oversize ball, and mashing it into the rifling.

    Old style deep rifling

There is so very much more than just deep rifling. Narrow square bottom deep groove rifling gets to the point that the patched ball needs to be mashed/deformed into the rifling just to seal the bore. If you don't get the bore sealed, you get blow-by which loses velocity and increases fouling...

Colonial American recipes that are common today

Rice pudding is still sold in stores here (PA) , both prepackaged and in deli counters, but it seems only in fall and early winter.

Colonial American recipes that are common today

This is curious, since allegedly baking soda was not developed until just before the civil war. Yet, Mary Randolph's, 1830's Cookbook, The Virginia Housewife makes reference to biscuits made with "soda" Sour dough as a leavener was known and used for thousands of years before colonial...

    CVA Mtn Rifle questions.

There is no bolster on a cva mountain rifle It has either touch hole or a drum and nipple. TC and Lyman have bolsters on their percussion guns.

    CVA Mtn Rifle questions.

Nah, I know better than to unscrew anything, probably hack it off the drum flush and then drill and tap for a 5/16 touch hole liner.
