What am I doing wrong? Confused

You could try alcohol for you wet wipe; works well for me. Dries quickly, so you don't dampen the next charge.

Need help, flash hole liner stuck!

Amazon lists a couple different 1/4" impact drivers. On my "to-get" list, too.

I know it was wrong, but....

You feel better now, don't you? Now the fun begins!

    Pipe in the possibles bag

I'm struck by the knife Hugh is holding in the picture. It looks to me like a dirk. If it is, I take it as a welcome historic justification.

    ANTIQUE FLINKLOCKS IN STORES

I'd add a simple bore scope and some good, flat-ground screwdrivers (in case the seller will let you pull the lock), for anything that gets past your initial inspection. Pulling them out on every gun is likely to raise the prices but they'll tell you a lot about hidden conditions.

    Gun Stock Shapes

I was a bit hasty in reading your post, and in my reply. That is one beautiful bit of inlay. I'm only beginning to learn about the Spanish style locks and arms. My attention was caught by the coach gun. My hasty reply linked the two, to my chagrin.

    Gun Stock Shapes

Initially the one coach gun looked pretty barrel-heavy and unwieldy but that probably helped with thte kick. The collapsible coach gun is amazing. I've not seen or heard of a two-piece damascus barrel before, but it makkes sense for the use. Thank you for posting the pictures.

    SOLD BALL STARTER

If you make another, I'd like one too. The design looks practical and the historic precedent makes it even more attractive. (Dreaming a bit, both my rifle and pistol have curly maple stocks, so a similar palm piece would be ideal - but hardly necessary.) Thanks.

    Mammoth ivory inlay...

You should be able to get New skin or Nexcare brand skin crack repair at most pharmacies. However, since alcohol will remove them, they may not protect from a solvent-based stain or acid-based grain enhancement. Good luck. Interesting problem. Please post the result.

    Real or not?

All of the more rational explanations about mismatched components, could this have been created in one of those technological backwaters of the world where archaic weapons and train gear were sold for re-use ( the old British empire for example) long after they were obsolete where they were...

    Weird blown patches

I'll second both coning and cutting the patch at the muzzle, as helping me avoid a lot of similar loading problems. c, Could you have some leading of the bore, along with the split patches? I would have sworn mine was cleaned to near-new brightness - until I put bore scope down it and saw...

Don’t sleep on the .50 PRB, Story and pic.

Good shot; good hunt. A good, accurate rifle, & a well placed ball. Used that way .50 PRB should kill anything in the lower 48. Another vote for a peep sight. I have to try that. My hat's off to you for working in healthcare. Thank you.

    Dremel bit?

I find a warded (no teeth on one o more sides) file most useful for this sort of adjustment. For widening a rear sight, you probably want one with warded edges, so you don't accidentally deepen it as you widen it, and vice versa.

How can I (or, can I? ) repair my broken Bess ramrod?

It's a metal rod but, were it mine, I'd get and carry a stout metal range rod as well.

    Retired

Notchy Bob, In one photo of the lock, with the frizzen at full swing, it doesn't appear to bear on the spring at all. Maybe the spring was reversed to let the frizzen swing freely, and spare the flint.

    Glass power horns

Great curios. Store/carry your powder in a regular horn, for safety. Reserve those as rum horns. You could probably get away with a very soft wood plug as well as cork, but nothing that would put pressure on the neck and which would not crush easily if pushed a bit deep (after sampling.)

    The temptation!

Get it. You'll use it well. When are you likely to see another?

    Potentially OCD Question

Alternating very hot/boiling water with cleaning patches, clears the fouling well for me. Once I get clean patches (several) coming back up, I'll swab with a patch wet with 90% rubbing alcohol or Everclear. Concentrated alcohol readily absorbs any lingering water. I'll follow that with a dry...

    Dealing with lead buildup?

re: leading. I was convinced that I was getting my rifled .50 bore sparkling clean, judged by a drop light, with warm water, a touch of soap, and scrubbing with patches. I even used a brush on the breech plug face. Then I got a bore scope working... At first I thought the crud was the...

Finding the Right Ball for your Rifle?

A friend just got a CVA brass barreled blunderbuss (an old kit), smooth bore. He wants to try a ball as well as shot. It's marked .69 but, because of the deep bell, I haven't been able to actually measure the bore. What is the common ball size for .69 musket? At least that's a starting...
