Hunt in the rain rifle cover someone made?

Assuming you aren't using a full cover but only a cow's knee, what about covering the muzzle with a condom to keep rain/snow out? Would firing through it be likely to damage anything or deflect the ball?

If I was building a pipe bomb, I failed miserably. No discernable damage. I figure that, at worst, I just proofed it- repeatedly.

A 7.5# .50 flint SMR, 7/8' barrel, 36" long. I was using .480 RB & 0.18 ticking patching, lightly lubed w/ canola oil. My measure throws 65 gr. ,normally 3F.

Rushing to go shooting, I grabbed a can of powder to refill my horn in the field. It worked OK but the pan kept self-priming from the charge, filling the pan so I had to dust a bit out to fire. I was sneaking a bit of practice in before it rained. Didn't realize what I'd done until I got home...

how did the long hunters clean there guns,,,,,,,,,,,

It also makes sense, to me at least, that it would have been easier to find someone able to repair a rifle than it is for many of us Maybe not on the frontier, but in many villages. Not a gunsmith, making guns, but someone who could repair or rebuild one. Even a blacksmith would have been able...

    Old eyes.

A simple, stick on disk describes the EyePal I use. I've researched the adjustable iris (dot) like you mention but it was way to expensive. My serious competition days are in the past.

    Old eyes.

Had one of the Merit pinholes. It worked well but came loose & I lost it. I now use Lyman's EyePal. It also work but cost about half as much - and comes in a two-pack. Simpler and 1/4 the cost per pinhole.

    One ugly rescue mission

One miracle, accomplished. Looks good! Are you sure that's the same rifle? Now, to tighten up the butt plate...

    Flintlock Long Rifle setup

I agree about advising that you consider a .45 (or a .50), depending on your (& surrounding) state's ML hunting regs on minimum caliber. At 65, I had no trouble handling or hunting with any rifle, but at 73 I find myself wishing my 38".50 barrel was swamped (for aiming balance) and would think...

    Rust In The Bore

Any high % alcohol will absorb water. That - and it's fast drying- is why I use it for my swabbing patches/tow. I normally use 90% rubbing alcohol but switch to Everclear for very cold shooting. I've had damp-fouled powder using a spit-wet swabbing patch w/out following w/ a dry patch, but...

    Rust In The Bore

That is a seriously beautiful target rifle. Not surprised you take extra good care of it. Just out of curiosity, what caliber is it?

    Some help - 4 bore

Rudyard, Thanks. That makes sense. The image I conjured from the term did not. I find the variety of rifling experiments fascinating.Still trying to figure out "straight" rifling I've seen reference to. Another search.

    Some help - 4 bore

Rudyard, The function of a "spur guard" is in the name, but don't think I've seen one & am having trouble visualizing it. Could you describe it a bit? Thanks.

Y'all be ready for a whole lot of stupid questions!

If the barrel is pinned in, I'd add one thing to your kit, to make bore cleaning easier (& protect that fine new stock wood), a clamp-on flushing rig. Log Cabin has it and I think ToW does too. I'm compulsive about cleaning; this rig made it far quicker and easier.

Leather Rifle Sheath at no cost.

Great idea! Recycling/repurposing at it's finest. I'm going to haunt the thrifts until I can recycle your inspiration.

Spring vices: do I need more than one?

Thank you, Sdlits, for posting that spring vice. It works well on all size springs I've tried it on. More importantly, the maker also offers a couole of tools I want but didn't know where to find. I had one of the traditional ones, but couldn't find it when I needed to strip a lock (used a...

    WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

Mark Herman's advice made me realize that, while you are here, I'd recommend that you read some of the other, older threads on shooting technique. in particular, advice about using a ramrod to avoid splitting it - if yours is wood - and hurting yourself. There are many lifetimes of shooting...

    Vent pick inlay????

Tempting. Would one be inappropriate on a SMR? I've lost too many picks- usually at the worst time. Now I carry spares, but haven't come up w/ a carrier/storage that I like and is reliable.

    Restore A Flintlock Pistol

If I understand your question correctly and am seeing clearly, it looks like a natural variation in the color of the horn stock tip. I would polish it gently (try the microcrystaline Rennaisance Wax), and enjoy the natural beauty. It looks to be a fine pistol. Let it show it's age proudly. For...
