"Youngster's" thoughts on 2023 Alabama Kentucky Rifle Show

Sorry I missed you, I tried to talk to everyone I could. I'll try to make it to the Cumberland one, we'll see how busy school gets. and you are correct, Hail State! She is an amazing shooter, the few times I've convinced her to try. I think it'll be an uphill battle, though. I've been...

"Youngster's" thoughts on 2023 Alabama Kentucky Rifle Show

At least in Mississippi, Yankees are welcome. We've mostly put aside our grudges. mostly... Thank you! It was a real treat to see his work and the work of his apprentice, I think he's taught him well. His and Jim Parker's shops are relatively nearby so I'll try to visit now that I know they...

"Youngster's" thoughts on 2023 Alabama Kentucky Rifle Show

Sorry for the wait! I don't know the preferred sharing method here, but I use Google photos a lot. I was mainly just gathering carving/crafting references for my own work, so lots of closeups of stocks and such. https://photos.app.goo.gl/44XBBLuH5L9bW87t9

"Youngster's" thoughts on 2023 Alabama Kentucky Rifle Show

What an experience! (long post, let me know if this is the wrong place for it) For context, I'm a 27 year old grad student that got into traditional muzzleloaders in June of last year and since then, it's eclipsed my other hobbies. My first project (within my budget) was to make Powder, caps...

Trying to find my first rifle kit

Thanks for all the input guys, you've been a great resource. I went with a pecatonica river Dickert kit with a cm2 stock, it ran be about 900$ total which wasn't terrible.

Building First Rifle, Wrong Breech Plug!

You're correct in pointing that having all the necessary resources to solve a problem does indeed solve the problem. If I assumed everyone always had access to the tools they need I would also be confused. After getting access to the proper tools, I was able to get it out.

Building First Rifle, Wrong Breech Plug!

Just called pecatonica, this was their last 7/8ths, .45, 42" barrel so there's not much they can do for me. So I gotta get the plug out myself. In "The Gunsmith of Greenville County" the author advised to check the fit of pre-installed plugs anyways, so I'll treat this like a learning experience...

Building First Rifle, Wrong Breech Plug!

I'll try to get a vice and get it off, it's in there really snug. I'll call them tomorrow and see if they'll take it off or ship me another barrel. I believe this was the last .45 cal, 7/8ths, 42" barrel they had. Very good advice.

Building First Rifle, Wrong Breech Plug!

Hey Y'all I finally ordered the components for my first rifle, a "Dickert" kit from Pecatonica. .45, caplock. Problem is, the barrel came with a breech plug already installed. I'm sure some would be grateful as I didn't have to pay for the service, but it's the wrong plug. I'm having a...

Trying to find my first rifle kit

Hey y'all, I'm looking to build my first rifle and I'm getting a bit discouraged. I'm in grad school so I'm on a budget, but I've bought The Gunsmith of Grenville County and The Art of Building the Pennsylvania Longrifle. My goal was to find a kit that may take some extra labor/research/borrowed...

    Howdy From Mississippi

Hey everyone! Like the title says, I'm in Mississippi. I've never shot black powder/muzzle loaders before and I've only been shooting for a few years (rifle target, skeet/trap) but very often. I'm trying to connect with the local and online muzzleloading community while I plan out my first...
