    Hunting clothes

Nice photos Spence. Thanks for posting. I guess I am in line with most of you. I really like the historic rifle and I am carrying a horn and pouch. When it comes to clothes though I need them to keep me warm and dry. I can't concentrate on being successful if I am miserable. Most of the places...

    Hunting clothes

So I am wondering what you wear when you go hunting. Are you trying to be as 1800s authentic as possible? Or 1700s if that is the time you prefer. Most of my hunting clothing is wool except some warm weather clothing that is camouflage. The wool clothing I wear is not period correct it is just...

    Trade Gun Barrel Length

Thanks for all the input. I will definitely stay away from the 30" barrel.

    Trade Gun Barrel Length

I am thinking about getting a trade rifle. I have a Lyman GPR and would like to add a smooth bore that I can use for small game and maybe deer down the road. So my question is - The NSW has three barrel lengths to choose from 30, 36, or 41. Does anyone have any thoughts about what one would...

Predator Hunting with Lyman and lead free round ball

Ok sorry for the slow response. I had to double check some stuff at home before I posted. The ITX balls are .524 and I am using .020 Cabelas pre lubbed patches. The lead balls are Hornady .530 and I am using the same patches. I am shooting it over 105 grains of Pyrodex RS. The lead RBs are...

Predator Hunting with Lyman and lead free round ball

I can't afford the Don Sith Hawken because I have the horse. However if I do dry ball one of those ITX balls I may have to buy the Don Sith Hawken because I might never get the ball out.

Predator Hunting with Lyman and lead free round ball

They are not round like a round ball. They have a belt or band around them. I seat them with the band running around the muzzle of the rifle so that the entire band ingauges the rifling at the same time ( if that makes sense). I am using Cabelas pre lubed patches at the moment. At 50 yards they...

    Squirrel hunt suprise

When I was younger I predator hunted a lot with a hurt rabbit call. I have called in fox bobcat and coyotes to with touching distance. It is awesome. I called in a small black bear to within 10 feet one time. In November of last year I started calling again. I alway put my back to something...

Predator Hunting with Lyman and lead free round ball

That is too funny. It does seem at times they work at getting you or themselves hurt. He is a good boy. Have had him for about 9 years. He was not real convinced at first that putting a cat on his back was the right way to go, but after I let him get used to it for a few minutes he was fine.

Predator Hunting with Lyman and lead free round ball

Arrowstorm. I went out calling on the 24th and called in a fox but did not get a shot. I did not know when I was going to get another chance to go hunting so just left it loaded. Did not get to go out again until yesterday. I have never left it loaded more than a week. When I was elk hunting I...

Predator Hunting with Lyman and lead free round ball

I have been working up a "traditional" load that I can use in California's lead free areas (soon to be the entire state). I have been working with the ITX .54 cal. round balls. At 50 yards they shoot about the same point of impact as regular lead PRB. I have been shooting them with my Lyman...

    Lost my best hunting companion

A loss like that is hard to take. We lost a real good Beagle to cancer two years ago. She was only 7. My wife and I both still have days when we miss her.

    Lead free Alternative

I have just started using the 54 ITX round bal. I have not shot anything with them but they pattern good out of my GPH. They are listed as legal on the Ca Fish and Wildlife web. A pig would be A nice way to test them.
