    Should I bore one?

Ha ha we think alike. My barrel is only 20", but I chose that length just to simplify mounting the under rib and ram rod thimbles. (was able to use some existing tapped and threaded holes) Yes mine is very light, just a tad over six pounds. I built it for trekking/hiking/exploring the wilderness...

    Should I bore one?

I agree, .58" would be the way to go, and that also gives one a powerful close up hammer of Thor with round ball. A smoothie is still good out to 50 yards, a little bit more with the right load. I recently had a very trashed out TC in .50" that I had bored out to .580". I'm very happy with it...

    Hitting low on Frizzen

One other thing, the closer you can move the flint forward in the jaws, the sooner it will strike the frizzen. (or a little higher up) A high quality lock will strike the frizzen at least halfway up, but more like 3/4. Ooops I see from your pics that your flint is about as far-forward as it's...

Well, the whole design of those locks are out of whack. I mean, the geometry of them are/is bad to begin with.

I have tried both, and can't find any difference. So I go tail-down, just to speed up the process a bit.

Yes, two horse-shoe rasps work perfectly.

Truth, and I will add that minor differences in ball size, in a smoothbore, does not make major accuracy differences as it will in a rifle. With a smoothbore, you can fire quite an undersized ball and just adjust your fit with thick patches, such as denim. If you "chew" the ball, you can go to a...

Yes, I like bee's wax, but any old wax will do. Some mix in lube with the wax, but I would not do that as lube can seep into the powder over time. Not a problem I guess if one is going to shoot them within weeks of making them, but as far as I can tell just wax provides plenty of lube it's self...

Have you tried dipping the ball end of your cartridges in wax? Keeps them sliding down the barrel real nice. These are for my Jeager, but same deal/idea.

Well, I find that 140 grains works for me. That is with 1fg. If you are using 3fg or 2fg I'd tone that down to 130 grains. Just a suggestion. The reason that the Brown Bess service loads varied from 150 to 165 or so depended or the quality of the powder. Quality of powder in them days varied...

Wow that's a shorty. I like it. My "Ranger Carbine" has a 30 or 31" barrel which I think is a good length, but I've always also wanted a really short one. Mine is a bit muzzle light with the 31", would be nice to handle the 26" first before buying. ?

As far as shooting low, you may want to up your charge. Remember that the standard load for the Bess was from 140 to 160+ grains. Mine is much more accurate with heavy charges. 1fg works best in my Bess, but 1fg likes a heavy charge. For the very light charges/under 100 grains, then 3fg or 2fg...

    Percussion V Flintlock?

To whom it may concern. My comment about the "Limeys" suffering from PTSD was directed at, and for, Brit, whom I know would not be offended, and in response to his post. I know Brit is a man, and not a little girl. It had nothing to do with the "new guy". On a forum consisting of men who like to...

    Pietta 1858 New Army

And...one wouldn't carry any other six-shooter with just what's in the cylinder, I'd want at least six reloads if packing it as a hunting sidearm. But 18 is a better/taditional number for a six-shooter. Hey, might get lost, have to make a fire and spend the night in the woods, shoot a wabbit in...

Oh for crying out loud. My Uberti (a .36) favors round ball over slugs. Has very deep seven groove rifling. I have a Euroarms 1860 Colt that has VERY shallow rifling, but is VERY accurate with ball. Have never tried a slug. A matter of trying different things, loads, projectiles, etc, for Pete's...

    Plains Pistol Leather

Those are cool, have not seen them. I like. Spent yesterday looking for the big grey kitty. Set up three times during the day to call, but kitty never called back. Nor did any bears. Sure could get the Ravens in with the "baby crow in distress" call. Did some exploring, was a good day. Ever...
