Think I’m ready to try some smoothbore deer hunting

I shot a three shot, three inch group with my Bess once, at fifty yards, but have not been able to repeat that. Four to five inch I can repeat, and can keep them on the plate at 60 yards. Of course the nicest black bear I ever saw when hunting with Bess was at 90 yards. :)

.660 Nessler Balls (shotgun slugs) in .69 Smoothbore....almost there....need advice

The base plug on a mold can be modified any which way you choose. You can turn it down for a thicker skirt, and also reduce it's length quite easily.

I think Ugly meant "under" rather than over. Just a hunch.

    Plains Pistol Leather

It is a .50", I have shot up to 70 grains fffg under a patched ball, but have toned that down to 60 grains. I also shoot 60 grains under the PA 240 grain conical, which is very accurate and has the same POI as the ball. That's for sighting in for serious business, for paper punching 40 grains is...

    Plains Pistol Leather

I have one nice set of German pouches, which are my favorite and go with the Jeager. I think the Germans also used a triple pouch, but don't have one of those. The double pouches work great though, and have room to spare for extra flints, cleaning jag, worm and ball puller, etc. Yes, those are...

.660 Nessler Balls (shotgun slugs) in .69 Smoothbore....almost there....need advice

To my mind, a harder lead would be more brittle, and the wrong direction to go. Those Foster slugs are like upside down cups, it's really no mystery that the nose of the slug wants to tear off the skirt. A fiber wad "should" push against the skirt and maintain it's integrity. I think. I'd...

Think I’m ready to try some smoothbore deer hunting

I really like the paper-plate method for evaluating one's maximum range when hunting with a smooth bore. At whatever range you can keep ALL your shots, (with the very occasional flyer) on the plate, that's your max range. I think that your average, cheap paper plate is 9". The paper plate...

    Plains Pistol Leather

I don't remember the cost, less than $100, more than $50. Worth twice the price. One other thing, as you guys already know, but especially with this holster, it's going to work best with a separate pistol belt, obviously not the belt holding up your pants. I like to shift it forward when I sit...

    Plains Pistol Leather

Hit create thread button too fast. The cant is very important. If the holster hangs on the belt like a plumb-bob, it will not be comfortable, will jack up your belt and pants when you sit down, and be hard to cross-draw the pistol. It is designed for right hand shooter, left side carry/cross...

    Plains Pistol Leather

I got two requests for pics of my Plains Pistol holster, so I'm going to just post them on this thread. The holster works very very well, so I would like to share it with y'all. Important things to note is the angle of the cant on the belt loop, and how the leather comes between the hammer and...

First shot always a flyer problem...

Carb is right, there's another possibility. The REAL may work best in shallow groove rifles, they almost seem to be designed for those rifles, and work well in them. Or not. The REALs are very short for caliber, and I've always wondered if that wasn't because of the slow minne' rifle's twist...

.660 Nessler Balls (shotgun slugs) in .69 Smoothbore....almost there....need advice

I'm talking about the big, thick, fiber shotgun shell wads. ? 1/2" long at least. Hey...fill the cavity with bondo. Worked for me, shooting a .575" minne' in a .580" bore. Changed the slug from sometimes going off the back stop, and not even a "pattern" to a 4-5" group at 100 yards. Mineral...

First shot always a flyer problem...

Hard lead does tend to lead a bore, at lower velocities and pressures. Allows gas cutting. You need a really hard "bump" to fill the bore and grooves with harder lead. In modern guns, the lead being too hard will often lead a barrel very badly. (and yes, visa-versa with very hot loads, then you...

.660 Nessler Balls (shotgun slugs) in .69 Smoothbore....almost there....need advice

Skirt separation is very disturbing. In a modern gun, there's quite a bit of wad behind the slug, like almost an inch worth. I would guess that supports the skirt. Skirt separation would encourage me to quit, but perhaps you should/could try some hard shotgun wads. ?? On the paper, lube will...

    Shipping Barrels.

Round ball rifling, most likely .54", but whatever he'll take it out to is fine with me. I picked up a .50" TC Hawken for free, and can't imagine what they did to ruin the barrel. I've never really seen the likes of it before, like it was severely rusted, and then baked in horse poo, or...

    Remington Navy-two powders, two groups.

Yes, it will easily take 26 or perhaps a bit more. At 24 grains the ball is well below the chamber mouth. It is loaded with 26 grains right now, but haven't had a chance to shoot it. (or am too lazy to clean it at the moment) Usually, normally, or before, a .357 case of powder and wonder wad...

    Remington Navy-two powders, two groups.

Some do use coffee filter papers. Nitrating is not required, but adds some extra insurance I'm sure. I think what works best, is a bullet designed with a rebated base, to wrap the paper around. But I wouldn't hesitate to experiment with round balls. My Remington Navy is certainly more accurate...

Turner Kirkland Rifle .40 caliber Percussion Rifle

You would take good care of a wall hanger, I'm sure. However, some people (not gun-nutz like us) hang them on the wall, never clean or wipe them down again, oil the metal and wood, or take them off the wall again, where they rust and dry up, same as if neglected in any other place. That's why...
