    Using tow for wads?

A modern replacement for "saddle pierce" is wool pack boot liner. The felted wool liners eventually get beaten down in the sole and don't insulate so well. I cut them apart at the seams and have at the sides with an arch punch. Then I melt/mix up 2/3 beeswax and 1/3 olive oil in a double boiler...

Antique Cannon Construction - Sage Advice Needed

About Dahlgren and Rodman: Dahlgren innovated the non-decorated "soda bottle" shaped cannon in the mid 19th c. He realized that the decorations on earlier cannons were potential fracture points and that the mass of iron should be towards the breech where the highest pressure was. Rodman...

    Historical Loading and Safety

I sling my bandolier on my right side and the match case on my left. I tie off the dead end of my match to some point on my left side so if I drop it the lit end falls to my left. If your bottles are capped tightly (a bit of beeswax on the mating surfaces helps, and also waterproofs) then the...

    Historical Loading and Safety

I made a match holder for myself, roughly based on a British grenadier's match case. Mine is a piece of 1-1/2" copper pipe about 8" long with an end cap either end. It has perforations on the bottom and outward side, and a hole in the top a bit larger than my match diameter. I built in rings on...

    26 TPI nipple

Thanks for all the responses. It's a 1/4" diameter thread. I looked in TOW but I didn't see a 1/4 x 26. I've read that this was fairly standard in the mid 19th century.

    26 TPI nipple

I have read a few old threads about threads - specifically nipple threads - and I still have a question. I have an 1867 target rifle with a nipple that seems to be threaded 26 threads per inch. Too fine for 20 and not fine enough for 28. Apparently fairly standard back then. The nipple is in...

Ottoman Shoulder Holster/Scabbards for Shishane (Miquelet)

Perhaps they are hooked into or tucked behind those sashes. Seems as if they have everything else possible in there.

    Japanese Matchlocks

Here's an example of the type of cheek stock snap matchlock of the 1500s that the Portuguese brought to Japan. http://www.vikingsword.com/vb/showthread.php?t=15294 A gift from the Grand Duke of Tuscany (a Medici) to a Saxon Elector.

    Japanese Matchlocks

Rudyard, I'll have to politely disagree on a number of points. The original snapping matchlocks that the Portuguese brought to Japan were cheek stock firearms. Not unusual in mid-1500s Europe. This suited the armored Japanese samurai/ashigaru. A shoulder stock is problematic with armor. The...

SOLD Beautiful Vintage Custom .36 Half Stock

The triggerguard, buttplate, and general architecture look very much like a rifle I have that was made in Dayton Ohio in 1867.

    A ‘breech loading’ matchlock!

    A ‘breech loading’ matchlock!

I love this inventive stuff. Thanks for sharing!

    What do I have here?

It looks in the genre of a southern mountain rifle. I agree with TreeMan that it was probably converted from flint. Iron trigger guard? What caliber bore?

    Re-facing flintlock pistol frizzen

Carbon steel won't anneal until you get it up to critical temperature, which is roughly 1425 F. That's dull cherry red. If you use a low temperature solder that melts at 400-600F and heat the piece from the other side of the frizzen you can make it stick without annealing.

    Vertical stringing

You might also try weighing your round balls. I had a "vertical barbell"pattern with one rifle and couldn't figure it out. Then it occurred to me that I was using a two cavity mold to cast the balls. Weighed the balls and there were two distinct weight ranges. Switched to one weight range and...

    Interesting combination wheellock & snaphaunce!

Makes me wonder what is putting tension on the snaphaunce ****, and how the sear interacts with it. There must be some kind of connection to the existing mainspring. The existing wheellock sear would go right by it to engage with the wheel. I'd love to see the inside of that lock. Could both...

    Black runs on my stock.?!

When I wear out a pair of socks I cut rings about 3" wide out of the elastic ankle part. When I'm cleaning a rifle I slip one of these rings down the barrel and just behind the lock. Catches all the spills.

    Cleaning wheellock

In case one of your chunks of pyrite crumbles at an inopportune moment. Say, in the middle of a battle. Span the wheel, swing down the fresh pyrite, stink and bang.

    Cleaning wheellock

The ones that Brian Anderson gave Ohio.75 he got from me and I got from eBay. They are the rough Chinese cubic ones. Look up "cubic pyrite golden" on eBay and you'll see listings for 100 gram and 1 kilogram lots of the rough cubes (as well as the shiny Spanish ones you should ignore). I cut them...

    Cleaning wheellock

Being a professional wet blanket, I'd say you should at least learn to remove the wheel and clean behind it. I don't know what kind of lock you have, but there will be a one or two screw retaining piece and probably two screws holding the pan on. Keep track of the position of the dimple on the...
