Cap and ball revolver firing bird shot

So if I have this right in my head..... The powder, a wad, then the #9 shot, then over that another wad with some glue or fingernail polish to keep the wad from allowing the shot to spill out when the pistol is holstered? I assume all that to get loaded and packed down with the rammer before...

Cap and ball revolver firing bird shot

A range right outside the back door. Now that is living! OK so here is a question, please don't laugh... What is a gas check? I have a Colt Navy in 44 and it is small enough for me to tote around in a holster on the property. Everyday in Spring/Summer and Fall I go out looking for snakes. The...

Cap and ball revolver firing bird shot

I guess I didn't think about how the shot will stay in one place before firing and not spill out. Seems like a wad on top of it would not help.

Cap and ball revolver firing bird shot

Would it damage a cap and ball revolver to fire 7.5 or 8 shot out of it? We're seeing an unusual abundance of rattlesnakes near us and I can't find ordinary snake shot for modern revolvers lately.

Conical bullets in a cap and ball revolver

Well I wasn't thinking about doing so, just was wondering how safe it was. OK so I can buy any Traditions 44 cylinder and put it on my Navy?

Conical bullets in a cap and ball revolver

I keep seeing cylinders for sale on certain sites like Midway and Sportsmans. I have a Pietta. Some of these Cylinders are from Traditions. How do I know what will fit and what's good and what's not? Also a follow up, Whats the thoughts on the 45 cartridge conversions for these?

CVA Pennsylvania cap and ball .50

OK will fire tomorrow or the next day, again at 50 yards. Fire, then run a patch of something with a lube on it, then fire again and repeat. I usually only have time for about 5-7 rounds before I have to pack up in time enough to allow for cleaning. I'll report back my accuracy and results...

CVA Pennsylvania cap and ball .50

In the mean time, would pre-lubed patches such as the EZ clean patches do until I get the time to mix up that formula?

CVA Pennsylvania cap and ball .50

So some brown on the patches came back, not a whole lot but still enough to get me motivated again. This time I used JB Bore polish. HOWEVER: I put a very thin amount on the patch, ONLY on the sides and not the face of the jag. I was concerned that I would end up pushing a bunch of it to the...

I have Pyrodex but after reading much on this forum, I'm not sure I should use it with a barrel I've been fighting rust in.

CVA Pennsylvania cap and ball .50

OK I need to come up with a system! My hopes were that, I could just set the gong out there, shoot from the deck outside the backdoor, while also manning a BBQ. I wanted to shoot a few shots, set the rifle down, clean off my hands and flip the burger/chicken/ribs what have you, then fire some...

    Moistened with what? Powder solvent?

CVA Pennsylvania cap and ball .50

OK well, finally fired it today. I started out with a .490 ball on a patch for a test fire. I didn't find the patch to see. So I moved over to the PA conicals. I am a fan. A little messy and hard to get started down the bore but they grouped nicely. I was firing from a small tripod rest, so...

Conical bullets in a cap and ball revolver

Loading 454's into mine was difficult, I had to really try to get that lever down. They shot fine but I just was hoping I wasn't hurting the gun during the loading process.

Conical bullets in a cap and ball revolver

So a .451 ball would be better than a .454 ball I presume?

I have a couple canisters, maybe I'll try to trade it away.

Conical bullets in a cap and ball revolver

Any disadvantage or advantage to using Pyrodex?

Conical bullets in a cap and ball revolver

I've heard folks say, 777, 3f, 2f, what are the differences? Is it burn rate? I think I heard 4f is for flash powder for flintlocks. I think I have 2f and 3f GOEX. I also have the Pyrodex equivalent but I've never used Pyrodex.

Conical bullets in a cap and ball revolver

Should all these screws be tight? I had an experience once with a malfunction. I can't remember what the issue was but I took it to a gunsmith, he'd never worked on one of these before. He tweaked one of those screws and it was fixed. But he didn't tighten it if I remember right, He just...

All 4 of them? What about the one on the other side?
