    Finished my Flat Buffalo horn

I'm picturing the forming plug as a flat 1/2" or 3/4" board but how do you go about sizing the plug or is getting it to fit in when round good enough (letting the outsides "find themselves" under the press)? Some day I hope to do this. I even built myself a horn press for that eventuality.

    Ball sucking

I must concur. It sounds related to the act of bringing tea with you on the hunt in your possibbles. Aren't you glad I let the "Ramrod Battered Balls" post go.

    Painting design on a stock.

Wow! That's just awesome! I'd love to know how you painted such beautifully fine thin lines. Very nice work! BTW your comment on quality paint is gospel!

    Painting design on a stock.

I'm thinking it should be possible but you likely don't want a build-up of paint thickness (that will be a wear problem). I would experiment on a piece of scrap of the same type of wood. Lay in your stain, then your paint and finish with a finish. While a little diferent I made up my own...

    Whiskey Flask Liner

Having had a lot of experience with alcohol (distillation) I would say you just have to remember (esp if over 35%) it's a solvent. Rumour has it that alcohol will even leach the tanins out of oak ;-) It's something to be cautious of. Lead pipes used to be common and I wouldn't want to be using...

    Rust in barrel

Just to be clear, chemically, matter (and energy) just change form (conservation of matter/conservation of energy) which is applicable here. BUT (going beyond chemically) ol' Albert said E=MC^2 which means they are equivalent to each other and the C squared term says by how much. You can convert...

    Rust in barrel

This is exactly my philosophy. The salt (KNO3 - all of it) must go!! Since I screwed up posting it before here's a movie I made of my steamer - 1st use before I made my stand (steamer sitting on the Bobcat fender). Once the steamer is done you can put on whatever protectorant you prefer but you...

    Rust in barrel

E=MC^2 - Energy and matter are equivalent and can be converted back and forth but not destroyed, but more importantly, "Dark Matter" is that crusty stuff found in the barrel after shooting - You heard it here first!

    Rust in barrel

I used to do this (and the hot water is good) but it didn't take me long to realize when I put the barrel into a bucket of hot water I was now trying to clean it with a brine solution. The answer, for me, was steam cleaning. It's the cat's *** and I've never looked back. I bought a Pedersoli...

    Radioactive frizzen?

Yes it is and it's generally much higher when you fly. I (as part of a group) do radiation monitoring and you can see examples of "Granite countertops" below - Rome (and Iran) is a bit of a hot spot. Environmentally you're generally fine pretty much anywhere...unless a government agent walks up...

    Radioactive frizzen?

Yes it’s those alpha particles that get you. Most people think of radioactivity in terms of high energy gamma radiation. Natural Uranium (and depleted uranium - predominately U238) gives off lots of massive *Alpha* particles that can’t even penetrate your skin but are far far worse (10-1000...

    Radioactive frizzen?

I hear ya...the slow cruising "Fogger" as we used to call it used to get more of us kids on bicycles swarming around the back of it than any ice cream truck. Being kids we never really thought about it but looking back on it now if the fog wasn't dangerous enough riding around blind at times...

Powder flask with a compartment for bullets

Thank you so much for this! I'd always wondered how exactly the oval sides were attached to the flat end cap. Now I know for sure. You're whole post has been absolutely fabulous & your work is exquisite! Bravo!

    18th and 19th century rope

No Problem. That book "Making Rope With Hand Operated Machines" I would highly *highly* recommend. It covers all aspects including best ways to do your lay-ups. It even touches on Patent Lay rope making (~1798) which doubles the strength of rope (not for beginners). I'll give you another link to...

    18th and 19th century rope

The book you likely want for ropemaking is this; http://www.makerope.com/making_rope.php Greg Davis is a great guy and will help get you going. He sells ropemaker's too. I got a Bradshaw head and a ropemaster machine from him. After that you just need to chose/get your fibers
