Help with Identification-Naval Axe? All Iron Spike Tomahawk

Looks more like a miners pick to me. A naval boarding axe would have a hatchet blade (for cutting tangled rope & jagged wood splinters) on one side and a sharp point on the other side (for hitting into a burning piece of wood & dragging it over the side). Many old mines were too tight to swing a...

    Chopped Flintlocks. How early?

As far as I can te I do not believe that the muskets we know as Brown Bess were introduced until early (1720s) in the 18th century, not in the 17th century.

Update on Unique Cases from Jim Kibler

Sadly, I don't have a stash of Unique cases. I may have to rethink getting another gun.

    Sea Service flintlock pistols.

What are the best quality reproductions of British Sea Service pistols? A friend is looking at a 18th c sailor impression & I don't have any experience with any of the repros.

    Gun show cannon

To the left of the "repro?" is what looks like a Lyle line throwing cannon - used with an elongated projectile that is attached to a small diameter but sturdy rope & shot from shore to a shipwreck for the crew to pull over a heavy rope to be able to safely get ashore. Almost a mortar but more...

    Gun show cannon

More interesting to me is what appears to be a Lyle gun partially shown in the left side of the photo.

    Crazy collectibles

Bags & horns are cheaper than guns, therefore I can have a dedicated bag & horn for each gun. Grab the gun & the bag & horn with it have that which is needed to shoot that gun. (Wish I had "just one more" gun).

What Part Of Clean It Now Don't You Understand?

I was taught that "if you don't have time to clean, you don't have time to shoot".

Huge Gun Show; Not a Cap In Sight

A friend who is a dealer in antique guns (mostly muzzleloaders) refers to most of todays gun shows as "ammo - cammo" shows & says that many promoters are only interested in how many tables they can sell, without regard to vendor quality or what merchandise is offered. He now mostly attends...

Interesting. I can admire the craftsmanship, but would not put it on my wish list even if I could afford it.

SON OF A TRACKLESS FOREST- MARK A. BAKER-

Mark's thesis is much shorter than the book. The book contains many lists, inventories & details not included in the thesis other than as references.

SON OF A TRACKLESS FOREST- MARK A. BAKER-

It is a massive book (992 pages) of limited general public interest. I would be surprised if it is available in digital form. A copy is currently listed for (only!) $385. I suggest that you try interlibrary loan.

    Astronomical cost of wood

My understanding is that the best wood for longrifle stocks comes from the bottom 5-6 feet of the tree trunk, cutting flush with the ground, which is not a common logging practice. Furniture makers want straight grain as do plywood peelers, but the best rifle stocks have the grain running in a...

Just a little better among reproduction Colt 1862s?

There are 3 Colts (2nd & 3rd gen.) and an ASM 1862 on Gunbroker right now. The correct "pocket" models are 5 cylinder revolvers on a small frame - perhaps too small for larger hands to comfortably hold. My daughter likes mine better than I do.

    Brass or iron for triggers

A small magnet will tell if the trigger is brass. IMHO brass triggers would be too easy to bend or break.

    Replica research

Thank you! I just happen to be a High Standard fan. There is always more to learn - which I think is a good thing.
