Gun show cannon

Saw this at a local show. Don’t know much on cannons and even less on pricing.

Said to have been found in Lake Erie. Not sure if on shore or while diving. Seller had it for someone else who’s father had passed.

Also said to have been refurbished in early 2000’s. Looked to have been bored and sleeved .
If i had the money is $2000 reasonable? Any suggestions on what it is from? Land or sea?

Trunions look small for being an old one. Seems awful smooth for being found in a lake.

About 2 inches across. Maybe soup can size, didn’t measure it.

No touch hole erosion, no pitting. All those sharp edges. Not even a nick or dent anywhere on the surface?

Judging by the bare metal showing through the scratched paint, its definitely not bronze. Raised from a lake??

I would believe the one on the left, maybe. Having worked with museums and collectors for many years, one thing they are all in agreement about, is documentation is the easiest thing to fake!

The Great Lakes are fresh water, often very deep and cold. Items can stay in good condition for a long time (forever?)

Yes in a fresh water lake it is quite possible. Especially if there is an oxygen depletion zone on the bottom. But getting buried under the mud on the bottom can still leave it looking pristine when found.

Seller didn’t offer any documentation, just verbal.
I agree the surface seemed rather clean. Only thing i thought was maybe turned on a lathe??? Some people not concerned with historical importance. Also didn’t show any embossing or raised symbols /artwork . Flat black paint can hide a lot.

I’d be mum about the found in a lake story. If it was, your state government may want to confiscate it.

Yes it is. King Arthur owned it originally. Used it to shoot a dragon.

Didn’t buy it. Show was before Christmas, just been thinking about it.
I would question salvage laws in the great lakes also. Tag says found in ‘30s. Might have a less greedy government back then.

Looks like a Dixie Gun Works field cannon barrel from the 1970's. The current ones are a little less ornate than they were back then, which is why it looks to me like one of those.

As a Great Lakes diver, I would seriously doubt that this cannon was found in Lake Erie. Even buried in mud, there would be pitting caused by rust.

Fake story but maybe believed by the new owner. Always make the buy the gun, not the story.
