    Percussion caps #10s and #11s

I just found these in stock somewhere but it appears that they want nearly 50 bucks for a mere 250 caps. I'm not down to that bad yet.

Are Swiss and Schuetzen the same powder?

I watched a YouTube video on black powder last night. They were claiming that the US military still uses about a million pounds a year. Reportedly they use it as a sort of secondary primer in artillery pieces to light the main charge. Very huge granulation I don't remember what they said...

How far down do you clean?

Is there any truth to what I've heard about not using any petroleum-based lubricant or oil? I read that it makes the fouling very hard to remove

How far down do you clean?

Question for cap and ball. When you shoot just how thoroughly do you clean when you were done? I have an 1858 Pietta bison. When I am done I take the cylinder out and I remove the nipples. The nipples I clean was solvent since they are stainless slix shots. The barrel and cylinder I use good...

Are Swiss and Schuetzen the same powder?

I live in Southwest Florida and it is the rainy season. I'm going to buy 2 lb which is probably a better part of a life supply for me so I think I'm going to go ahead and splurge and get the Swiss

Are Swiss and Schuetzen the same powder?

I watched a very long video last night on black powders historical and current... I mean true black powder. Supposedly dogwood charcoal is the best and that is what Swiss is made with. An equal amount of Swiss versus any other black powder, is said to produce 10% more gas volume. I was looking...

    Hello nice to meet you.

Thanks for the reply and information. I watched a little video on powders last night and evidently Swiss might be the only one that has made with dogwood alder charcoal. Which is said to produce 10% more gas on a equal charge versus other powders and supposedly less fouling. Powder and caps...

    Lead ID

Also another tip. But these 1 lb ingots that I have, have been able to cut them up into small chunks using long handled pruning loppers. But I don't have a melt pot and I am limited to what my little ladle can hold and a propane torch.

    Lead ID

I have used wheel weights in a 451 round ball mold for some years with my 1858 New model army. They say it can be hard on the loading lever. I also learned that I should be using a 454 mold which I have recently acquired. I also recently acquired 5 lb of pure soft lead from roto metals. Now...

    Pyrodex Select shelf life

I think the most important thing is storing it in a cool dry place. I'm sure even more important than temperature is keeping humidity away from it.

    Pyrodex Select shelf life

I have had a can for about 8 years and it has been open that long. Always stored inside of the house. I went to hear some the other day and there was a little bit of clumping inside of the bottle. I just shook the bottle and it broke right up and it seemed to shoot fine to me but I did not have...

Are Swiss and Schuetzen the same powder?

I was wondering this myself. Recently I found Schutzen for $23 a pound. The same place offers the Swiss powder for $32 a pound. I plan on ordering a couple of pounds. Do you guys think the Swiss is good enough that I should spend 10 more dollars a pound?

    Hello nice to meet you.

I have seen that. Thank you for that information. I'm still sitting on about 430 caps and I don't shoot all that often, so it's not getting critical yet. But it is nice to know that it's available. I believe his prime all compound is essentially black powder with some sand added as a...

    Hello nice to meet you.

I've got a little over 400 caps and I don't shoot that often so it's not critical just yet. In the good news department I did find Schutzen ( sp ) 3F black powder for $23 a pound with no minimum order and they $20 hazmat fee. They also had Swiss but that's over 30 a pound. I have not shot...

    Hello nice to meet you.

Hello muzzleloading forum. I am an avid shooter of cap and ball revolvers. Not an expert by any means but have been doing it for about a decade now. I cast my own round lead ball and have recently been doing some research on how to make one's own powder and caps. It seems that percussion caps...
