How fast can BP revolvers be reloaded?

Hollywood and Louis L’amour novels have filled our imaginations with fallacies. Civilians just didn’t get into the big shootouts we see portrayed on the screen. They were quite rare. The capabilities of one’s weapons dictate tactics, not the other way around. And before anyone blasts me, I...

    Capandballs tour of Pedersoli factory

An interesting video of the Pedersoli factory showing machinery and hand-crafts.

OP wads and load 'n clean, same stroke.

Mate, the technique of loading the ball with a damp cloth on the jag is an old target shooting trick. I was skeptical when I was told about it but it definitely keeps the fouling to a consistent level shot to shot. And because you are wiping between shots the bore never gets filthy making final...

    Modern Whitworth rifled musket accuracy

I have PH Whitworth #191 made in 1978. I love it but it frustrates me no end. I think the Whitworth legends are just that; legends. There’s a good reason why it wasn’t adopted into British military service…because it’s too fiddly. It has to be loaded so carefully and cleaned very thoroughly...

    “Kentucky pistol” in history

Hello, I hope everyone is doing well. The lineage of the kentucky rifle is well established and full of mythology and myriad terminology, generally referring to an American built full stock rifle used in the late 18th and early 19th century. (We all know what is being referred to here, no need...

Mule ear and under hammer locks?

Thank you for your replies. They do indeed seem practical and utilitarian.

Mule ear and under hammer locks?

Hello all, I hope everyone is doing well. I have only ever used standard flintlocks and caplocks. I have never used or even remember seeing an underhammer or mule ear lock other than in photographs. Are there advantages to those styles over the customary flintlock/percussion locks?

    Schuetzen vs Goex

Wano is either rebranded Schuetzen or is made by them. It‘s really all that is available in Queensland. I used only Goex when I lived in the States and I think Wano is a little better overall, especially the “P” grades. However I haven’t used Goex for a long long time so my comparison from...

    Canandball’s bullet lube

I found the recipe in an old issue of Pedersoli Black Powder No.1 from August 2011. I tried many good lube recipes, but I found that the easiest is the best: 2 parts of beeswax, 4 parts tallow, 4 parts synthetic motor oil. I suppose it doesn’t matter if the ingredients are measured by weight...

    Canandball’s bullet lube

Blowing dust off this thread, I have found the answer It‘s 1 part beeswax, 2 parts tallow and 2 parts synthetic engine oil. I’ve been using 50% beeswax, 25% tallow and 25% neatsfoot oil with good results but I’ll try this next and report on my results

I can’t get my Whitworth’s bore truly clean

That’s what it’s gonna be for me! Amazon Australia sells 8oz cans for $130 each! No way!

I can’t get my Whitworth’s bore truly clean

Thank you for your advice about avoiding emery paper in the bore. I didn’t think it would be harmful, since a Whitworth is actually a smooth bore with a twist. I’ll persevere with the 0000 steel wool.

Thank for for that suggestion. It surely can’t hurt

I can’t get my Whitworth’s bore truly clean

I made a hexagonal jag out of a .50 caliber jag, which works fine for cleaning between shots. I was thinking about some wettable fine sandpaper/emery cloth on that jag would give a good scouring and get into the corners. I don’t know if an emery paper of sufficient durability exists. The normal...

I can’t get my Whitworth’s bore truly clean

Thank you for your considered advice. I do use some petroleum products; Ballistol or Hoppes oil for rust prevention (which works great on all my other arms). And whilst I am setting up my shooting supplies I pour a little shellite down the barrel and let it sit. I‘m probably making a mountain...

I can’t get my Whitworth’s bore truly clean

Hi, I hope everyone is doing well. This question may be more appropriate in the ‘general muzzleloading’ section as it’s about cleaning and rust prevention. However I don’t have this problem with my other muzzleloaders with standard rifling, so I submit it here. I clean all of my arms, modern...

Are Pedersoli revolvers worth the higher prices? Anybody have one?

Hi mate, nice to hear from you. Yes, the Aussie Pedersoli distributor has a high-profit objective to be sure. And the size of the market down here is smaller than the USA and there isn’t as much competition. However even private sales of second-hand Pedersoli revolvers command high prices.

A cast of thousands, another major motion picture, not so much

It’s good to see the Boy Scouts still around. A worthy institution in the formation of young men.
