    New from Hampton Roads

Howdy from Charles City- technically still in Tidewater! 🤣 The Department of Wildlife Resources has a few sighting-in ranges, but they close them from April to September for some ridiculous reason. The closest one to you is actually here, on the Chickahominy WMA. EDITED: wouldn’t help you...

    Avalon Forge

Update: After I saw this thread, I contacted John to order a couple of things. He said that some of them were not in stock, and he wasn’t going to order any more- having just turned 90, he’s looking to sell the business and retire. He still has some inventory, and is still an awesome vendor to...

    Barktan deer leather

Since 2020 I’ve been “brain”tanning with a mixture of 1/2 bar of Ivory soap (grated with my cheese grater) and 1/2 cup of vegetable oil, dissolved in boiling water and tempered back to bath temperature with cold water. About a gallon, gallon and a half altogether. The results are exactly the...

    Gardening ..again

Yesterday was Agriculture Day at the museum. My friend Greg (in the white cassock at left) and I harnessed the power of dozens of children over the course of the day and got about 100 corn seedlings planted across 2 sites. In a couple of weeks we’ll drop the next batch in. I don’t mind admitting...

    Hello from Virginia

Not too far, then. You should come up to Surry for the OVPR rendezvous this fall- it’s the 40th anniversary. Jay

    Comments on this wheelock?

I’ve handled this wheelock, and it was worth every penny of the sale price. Bill did really amazing work- it was always a hoot to see what he would build and bring out to the Rendezvous this year. Because I work at Jamestown, he would always show me his pre-flint stuff. Jay

    Barktan deer leather

Nice work! I took Matt’s class last year- it was amazing! I’m mostly a braintanner but sometimes you just gotta have bark leather. Jay

I’m sorry for your situation, Larry. I will gladly purchase a barrel for a project I have in mind. And I’ll talk to my boss- we’re working on our capacity to build matchlocks at Jamestown, and a couple of caliver bore barrels with appropriate sights would be useful. Jay

    Gardening ..again

On Saturday we’re doing an agriculture-themed event at the museum. My last director decided I was going to do this, scheduled it for last weekend, and retired. I was able to get it rescheduled- Friday will be our last frost date. Two weeks ago, we had our annual Military Through the Ages event...

Target shooting. Roundball .440 vs .445

Will a lead ball expand to fill the grooves? I thought that’s what our patches were for. I’ve never seen rifling marks on any of the roundballs I’ve recovered. I shoot both .440 and .445 in my .45 with no discernible difference in accuracy. I suspect that has as much to do with my marksmanship...
