    Aging Metal

 That is exactly the look I am after, Mike! Thanks for the post. When you say, WAY too far, how too far are you going, maybe until the metal is very pitted? How long do you leave the solution on? Thanks, Bryan

    Aging Metal

Very similar, Rabbitt, maybe a little more on the brown side. What did you do to the metal on that gun? Thanks, Bryan

    Green Horn

Hi, ED. Lots of good advise here! I'm sort of a newbie also, and like you am building a Tennessee rifle, only mine is a .50 with a Green Mountain barrel. I'm planning no butt plate, horn or bone on the comb and toe plates only, and the rest in iron trim. L&R Durs Egg lock, curly maple stock. I...

    Aging Metal

As a follow up to my earlier post, suggesting the color I want to achieve on this rifle, I have an original 1876 Winchester 45/75 that has the patina that I am looking for. The metal has gray steel showing thru, but has taken on a very nice brownish patina that I think dignifies this rifle's age...

    Aging Metal

Thanks for all the help,Guys! I guess the finish I'm really after is the aged metal look that I see on a lot of the nicer guns on this site, and others. The metal LOOKS at least 100 years old, like maybe it once had a finish, that has been worn off, and the metal has taken on a patina all its...

    Aging Metal

Hey, Fellas. I'm a newbie to all this building, but I have parts to build a Southern Mountain/ Tennesee rifle, and I'm wondering what the best way to age the metal would be. I bought some Plum Brown, and have used it before, but I'm really liking the aged gray patina that some of you are putting...

    70 grains strong enough?

Try laying a big piece of white paper in front of the rifle when shooting on the range, and see how much black stuff falls on it when you shoot... I'd bet there will be some unburned powder with some of the higher loads. I would pick a range that was close to my maximum effective range, start...

Do I need to harden the frizzen on my flintlock?

Thanks, Guys! I'll give her a try, and post pictures when I get time to start on her! Bryan :thanks:

Do I need to harden the frizzen on my flintlock?

I bought a stock from a local guy that has been inletted for a barrel and the ramrod hole has been drilled, but the rest of the stock is just rough cut. He also had most of the rest of the parts for the rifle he had intended to build himself, but other things got in the way. I'm excited about...

Do I need to harden the frizzen on my flintlock?

Excuse a newbie question here, but I'll ask anywho. I bought a new L&R Durr's Egg lock for a poorboy/ mountain rifle I'm assembling parts to build. This is my first Flintlock, and I need to know if the frizzen come hardened, or should I harden it with kasenit before use. Thanks for the help, I'm...

    Polishing with a Dremel

You may want to give Flitz metal polish a try, has worked real well for me. I just use it on an old washcloh, no power tools needed. Bryan :results: :m2c:

    Baby Fox

Hey, Cowhand. My wife is a budding wildlife artist, and would like to maybe get copies of your fox pictures along with your permission to make a painting from them. What do you think? Bryan

I bought a Navy 12 double off gunsamerica.com, and could not be happier with it, even though I did not build it. Bryan

    New Kit

I have to agree... get the bestus, most expensive kit that was on my want list, then take the sleeping pills. Could be at least as bad by having to sit thru Springer( that's not even funny)! Just don't let SWMBO get a trend started here, or else your rewards for such cruel and unusual punishment...

    Powder horn

Hey, Lodge. Ever think about doing a build along or printing some directions to us less informed brothers on how you make a horn like that? What did you stain it with? I like your work! Bryan

Traditions Kentucky rifle kit...to buy or not

I think for the money, you will probably learn something from that kit that will help you on advanced projects, and if you are very careful, you'll probably get a fine shooter. I know my CVA mountain rifle kit has helped me get started, and shoots just fine. Bryan :m2c: :results: :agree:
