    In casting 54 cal. .530 balls I am experiencing weights of 221.9 gr. to 223.1 gr. What would be acceptable + - tolerance for best accuracy?

    An in depth response, thank you. I am shooting a .54 cal. Lyman Deerstalker. Bore dia. is .542, groove dia. is .558. Using a .535 ball with a .012 linen patch. Lube is a mix of 75/25 bees wax and canola oil. Performance has been poor.

    Anyone ever measure Deerstalker rifling depth?

    I have a deerstalker about 4 yrs old. Bore is .542, grooves are .558. I use a .535 ball and a .012 linen patch. seems to work OK. It figures out to be about .008 grooves.

    Thanks for the welcome. Sorry for the confusion. Years ago I started in cowboy shooting as the "The Piney Creek Kid", it got shortened by range officers just to "Piney" or "Piney Creek". I didn't realize I was setting the stage for confusion.

    Funny you should ask that. I finished it the same way I finish all my stocks. Sanding and whiskering through 320 grit. Staining with an alcohol based dye of my friends choice. Deeply burnishing and finally over 50 coats of hand rubbed linseed oil. I am not sure whether comparing my finish...

    Dragons Blood

    I restocked a rifle for a friend who then received an evaluation from an authority of importance who described the finish as a "Dragons Blood" finish. Is this a technique known to have particular value?
