I've been away healing up but getting serious about load development for my 54 48" twist lefty flint Dstalker. I have searched but unable to find a definitive answer. I've read references to .008 and .004. My rifle is at least 15 years old. There are references Lyman once publishing this info but I've not found it. I did find one published measurement on a namlh web site

stating 540 bore and 556 groove. Anyone ever slugged a Lyman 48" twist 50 or 54 barrel?

Edit: it is a 5 narrow lands and 5 wide groove barrel making measurement very difficult. Comparing .004 and .009 paper to the depth under a magnifier definitely closer to .009, appears the same. Also I prefer redneck homesteader to redneck bubba when you comment.

Lyman in their manual online suggests the reader measure the bores of their particular rifle. The manual uses the example of .526 deep grooves and a .498 round ball. The difference between the two is .028 and divided by 2 = .014. So they suggest using a .015 patch. This may be because they import their rifles from an Italian black powder house, so perhaps the depth varied enough over the decades that the only way to know would be to check your barrel to know for sure.

I have a deerstalker about 4 yrs old. Bore is .542, grooves are .558. I use a .535 ball and a .012 linen patch. seems to work OK. It figures out to be about .008 grooves.
