    Lyman Plains Pistol

A 50 for cans is fine but I wouldn't piss off a mountain lion with anything less than a heavily loaded 54. I've seen what one can do to a mature wild horse!

    Lyman Plains Pistol

I bought a .54 because I figure on carrying it while hunting for a quick finishing shot on wounded game, and I usually hunt with a .54 rifle. If I was buying one for target only I would go with a .50, smaller balls, less powder, = cheaper to shoot (a little). If you plan on doing any killing...

    Lyman Plains Pistol

Yea... I coulda shopped around a little and got a better deal. But like I said, this gun is like new only I didn't get the lock screw bezel that goes on when you take the belt clip off. I plan on leaving it on anyway, and I like to support local business when I can. And it was one of those "what...

    Lyman Plains Pistol

I know I should have asked before spending the money but.... What experience do any of you have with the Lyman pistol? Good Bad? I found what I think was a pretty good deal on a like new used one today and brought it home. I know their GP rifles have a good reputation so I figured the pistol...

Get to the point! ends Oct 31, 2011

I was hoping to get in on this one but it seems October got away from me too fast. Last weekend was the first time I got to go out shooting all month and it was too late to send in a target. So, I went out plinking some desert rats. Man, that .54 ball sure makes a mess of them! LOL

    Flint vs Cap

Personally I prefer flint, though I shoot both. Flinters take a bit of a learning curve as has been previously mentioned, but are more satisfying to learn to shoot good in my book. One advantage to percussions is that if you run out of real black powder and none is available locally you can...

    3f Black powder in a 50 Cal.

Kinda backwards but, my .50 GM barrel prefers 2f where my .54 CVA barrel prefers 3f. Either will work. I would work up a good load with one, then try the other later just to see what happens.

    Flint Kapping

Thanks for the picks Robby, I too have been baffled as how to properly sharpen my flint. Many have given descriptions and I have tried different angles. Sometimes I get a sharp one, sometimes just a blunt one. I have some old dull flints to put in my lock and a tiny brass hammer to try it out...

    Longhunters vs Aliens!!

I am almost afraid to ask what is in that vial. Could it be genuine alien urine recovered from the fallen in that great battle in 1770? :idunno:

    Longhunters vs Aliens!!

He He He, I forgot about the good old "State Stores" there. Here you can buy a bottle of Jack in the 7-11. :blah:

    Longhunters vs Aliens!!

We have heard a couple such stories from PA lately. I lived most of my life there, and have had a few such experiences (mostly back in the 60's and 70's while pickin' wild mushrooms and such). I think it is something in the water. I have since moved to the desert where there ain't no water and...

Original reason for shooting / hunting bags ??

Oh please tell me it is not the pretty pink one my wife sold out from under me! :rotf: Sorry, I couldn't help it. :idunno:

    Drilling out a nipple

I bought a used .58 cal rifle recently that someone had drilled the nipple out to almost 1/8 inch. As I am more used to flintlocks I didn't think much of it. I fired a couple shots with a modest powder charge (60 gr FF) under a PRB and noticed the cap was completely gone after firing. Hmmmm...

That, my friend, is some good shootin'

    my new hawken

One small problem with that rifle you may want to be aware of... Though I am no expert, and not well traveled to many rondys, the couple clubs I have shot with will not allow you to compete with a tang or peep sight. Whether it is PC/HC or not, they require open sights only to keep things fair...

    Problems with my first flintlock

I assume your friend tried a different flint, and tried adjusting it so it hits higher? I find some flints work better than others in my lock (new style TC), and all will usually work if I fiddle around to get the angle right.

Get to the point! ends Oct 31, 2011

I'll give it a shot (or 3). My problem now is what to shoot, flint or cap, what caliber? Life was so much simpler when I only had one gun.

Flintlock vs Percussion ends Sept. 30, 2011

What is this left hand / right hand stuff? I usually use both hands to shoot, 'cept when I'm showin' off! :blah:
