    .58 cal hunting rifle

I would forget the ball-ettes if you are looking for serious knock-down power. Others may have other experience with them, but I have tried them in both 1-48 and 1-70 twist barrels (50 cal only) and they seem to shoot ok with moderate powder charges, but step up to heavy charges and accuracy...

    Early T/C Hawken Accuracy

I once shot a 3 shot cloverleaf with my old TC flinter at 100 yds, I seriously doubt the gun shoots that well, I KNOW I can't shoot that well with open sights, pure luck. I still kick myself for not buying a lottery ticket that day.

.50 T/C Hawken Value these Days

Local gun shop has 2 in rather nice shape at $350+ each. I bought one in about the condition you describe last Spring for $250 ish. Have seen lots of used decent ones online for 300-350, seems to be about the going price. As mentioned before, some people think they are worth a lot more. Is the...

    CVA USA Barrel

I appreciate the lesson on breechplug types, some good info, as well as the scan necci posted. I was considering swapping one of mine to flint (old CVA, "made in USA" barrel). Again, thanks, to both of you.

    CVA USA Barrel

Not to question you, just looking to gain some knowledge, I am rather new to percussion guns, why would that not work?

    Lyman GPR Lock troubles

How far away from the frizzen is the flint when the frizzen is closed and the lock on half cock? You may need a longer flint or maybe just move it out further in the jaws. Also, is the bevel up or down on the flint? You may try flipping it over, different locks like different set-ups. The flint...

    Split nipple

The nipple was not mushroomed, so I don't think it was dry fired. I believe the spring on the cock is ok, it is about the same tension cocking it as my TC flinter. I have 2 old CVA mtn rifles and they actually have more tension to cock them. I always take the nipple out when cleaning, and I have...

    Split nipple

I bought a used TC Hawken caplock off a member here a little while back (very happy with my purchase BTW). I looked the rifle over carefully before using it and everything looked good, except the rear sight was broken in shipping which was no big deal since I was planning on installing a tang...

    Early T/C Hawken Accuracy

I have 2 older TC Hawkens, both came with shallow groove, 1-48 twist rifling, to shoot conicals as well as round balls. From what I have read, some came with round ball barrels, deeper grooves, 1-60 or 66 twist. The round ball barrels were marked "round ball" as I understand. You might want to...

    CVA USA Barrel

As far as a breech plug, do you have a percussion breech plug in it now? I have 2 old CVA mtn rifles and they have drums that I think you can screw out and install a screw in flash hole liner to convert to flint. Then just change the lock.

    TC rate of twist

You would win that bet, I bought one for my Hawken 10 years ago. The rifle shoots better than I ever will, and I have tried loads from 50gr of 2f up to 100gr behind a PRB with no loss in accuracy.

    Get the lead out, please!

What I use in my centerfire handguns is some strands of COPPER "Chore Boy" pot scrubber wrapped around a snug-fitting bore brush, scrapes the lead out in chunks and won't hurt the bore if you be sure to use the copper pads, not the cheap plated steel ones. Available in most grocery stores.

    Double Rifles, who's using them?

I have been thinking about getting on of them for years, I don't want to buy a gun I won't use though. My single barrel rifles are heavy enough to carry around the hills around here, I'm afraid a double would stay home too much. I like the idea of 2 quick shots though, but then I would worry...

is it piractical to turn a cap lock into a flint lock

I have 2 TC Hawkens, one flint and one cap. Just for the heck of it I swapped barrels and locks from one stock to the other, no problem. As for changing a caplock to flint, TC has a patent breech that would require barrel or at least breech replacement I believe. Looking at mine I don't see how...

    Twist

Years ago I was working up some loads for my new Green Mountain barrel in my old TC flinter. When I set my target up at 100 yds the old guy next to me with his super-duper mag was giving me a hard time saying I'll never hit that with a old flintlock. He was watching through his spotting scope as...

    Too light spring

Is it possible that your hammer is not holding the flint at the proper angle? I bought an old TC Hawken several years ago, I learned how to shoot and tweak a flinter with it, and had it so it would fire so quick I rarely heard the hammer fall. I loved that gun. The only problem was it ate fints...

    Filled my lion tag

Oh Wow! You are my hero! I live in NV where you can buy 2 mtn lion tags per year over the counter. I have been trying to connect with one for a couple years now by calling, and spot and stalk methods, figured it would be a real challenge. I have yet to see one. One of the local wardens tells me...

    Range result of salvaged rifle

From what I can see in the pic you posted it sure looks good compared to what you said it was. Hopefully it shoots as good as it looks. As I've mentioned before, I have an old CVA mtn rifle that the bore is really rough, it shoots better than I can, so I ain't gonna "fix" it.

Great Plains RIfle - New Nipple Must Snap Cap Twice

I was browsing around online looking for some spares lately and came across those bronze nipples and was wondering about them. I am thinking that stainless is a harder, stronger metal and would be less likely to wear or break as fast as bronze. As I understand bronze is an alloy of brass, which...

almost 2 years of work, my 54cal hawken is done, for now lol

Looks good, I am partial to light colored stocks. What did you use to brown the barrel?
