Patch/Cap box on a percussion rifle

My ‘mother’ is #9, in Idaho. I’ve been a member of my ‘sister’ #86 in Queensland Australia for a looong time. Always glad to greet a Brother

Patch/Cap box on a percussion rifle

Its a ‘nice feature’, like a sunroof on a car. I didn’t say patch boxes are actually useless, just unnecessary. To each their own. I assume you have Traveled to the East if you know Hiram. 👍

Patch/Cap box on a percussion rifle

I have never understood why they were ever built into rifle butts. They are really unnecessary. That being said…I carry a cleaning jag and a ball screw in mine. ;)

    Bore cleaners

I’m gonna stir the pot …. I bought a well used muzzleloader made in 1978 and I have no idea how many homes it has had. The bore looked well maintained and I continued on with my cutting oil/water cleaning solvent. I never stop cleaning until patches come out clean and white. A trusted friend...

    Whitworth rifle range report

Hi David, Yes I have a 50 cal brass jag that I carefully filed into a hexagon. There is an eBay seller in the UK that makes a LEM mould that looks ideal.

    Whitworth rifle range report

Today’s range trip was terrible. The rifle was acting like a complete pig. ( the rifle is just a piece of metal and wood, so it’s my fault). The muzzleloader gods were displeased. Tumbling bullets for some reason, couldn’t hit anything..but a bad day at the shooting range is still better than a...

    Whitworth rifle range report

Part of the advice I have received is that pure lead doesn’t maintain nose integrity at long ranges as well as an alloy. 6 months ago I had never fired a long range traditional muzzleloader. It’s much more involved than patched round ball shooting. A few generous souls on this forum and here in...

    Whitworth rifle range report

Hi mate, thanks for your consideration. As I said a few posts ago, my journey with this rifle is a step forward and then a step back. I keep notes of every shot but my results are inconclusive. I seem to be having the best results with greased cork or leather wads, a then felt on top boosted my...

    Whitworth rifle range report

Hi mate, I use 3f in my round ball longrifle and shotgun and I intended to use it with this but sound advice from very knowledgeable shooters advised against it because of dangerous breech pressures. I haven’t tried a grease cookie and I won’t rule it out. I suspect that finding the wad type is...

    Whitworth rifle range report

Thank you Dave and David and Rudyard. I have certainly taken your points. ‘I’m experimenting with velocity because it has come to my attention from skilled LRML shooters that in order to hit a target 600-1000 yards away they are needing 1250-1350 fps from their respective powder charges. I...

    Whitworth rifle range report

Hello again, I hope everyone is doing well. I’m still awaiting delivery of my MVA sight base, so I thought I would do some chronograph work to see how much powder would be necessary for around 1300 fps. I recall reading or hearing somewhere that is typical velocity necessary for long ranges. I...

Poachers Of The Georgian Period Beware

Yes they will work but they need a little extra priming powder held in with hairspray. Better than nothing but just so

Is muzzle velocity affected by cap types? (Musket vs #11)

Yeah that’s not funny! It hasn’t happened yet but I imagine pulling a hexagonal bullet from a hexagonal bore would be dreadful

Is muzzle velocity affected by cap types? (Musket vs #11)

Thank you all for your consideration. I appreciate it muchly. I‘m also awaiting the delivery of a new base for my tang sight, so I’m not too focused just now on target work. In the mean time I need to experiment with powder charges to give enough energy to move a 550 grain pill. I’ve been...

    Rawhide Wrap

Congratulations on your purchase. It’s awesome to hold a piece of history. Remember that those old-time ‘bush repairs’ were done out of necessity, not aesthetics. However it is your rifle so it’s your choice. As for sources of rawhide, any leather work hobby craft store will have it, or ebay...

Is muzzle velocity affected by cap types? (Musket vs #11)

It is a borrowed chronograph and I don’t like to take advantage of other peoples generosity. I could buy my own I suppose but it would be a seldom-used item. I‘m hoping to develop a load that I can use for 100 or 1000 yards
