    It finally happened....

I have a Thomson 50 cal. I load it with 50 grains of very old Hodgdon pyrodex RS or triple 7. i have used 490 RB , 350grain max-hunter with this load. it would shoot through a 3 to 4 in. phone book(yes I still have some) and the 1/4 in. plywood that was holding it at 50 yards. killed more...

yes try something simple first take barrel off stock tie a string and hang then tap it with a hammer. if sound like a bell then try shooting lite load while standing way back with a string. if it didn't ring like a bell don't shoot.

Hunt scheduled at Spartan Hunting Preserve

what I had poorly tried to say you don't need a cannon or a cannonball with a pound of powder to kill something. in Indiana it legal to use a 410 shotgun to hunt deer. some big bad ass man will be out there with a 12 gauge that shoots a 3in. mag. slug, but my granddaughter can kill just as big...

Hunt scheduled at Spartan Hunting Preserve

thanks, do you know if anybody ever did compare a black powder cartridge to a muzzleloader round. I did read that a 44 cal Walker at 25 yards was same as a 44 mag. cartridge

Hunt scheduled at Spartan Hunting Preserve

just asking, don't you compressed the powder and bullet in the barrel just as much as in a cartridge? a cartridge just made it easier to reload?

    Black Powder fouling in 54

round ball are smaller you should start with 40gr. and go up till you get what you want. grouping or killing power. being able to go though 3to 4 in of card board or 1to 2 in. wood will kill. try all different lubes I like bore butter but that is me.

    Black Powder fouling in 54

yes stop wasting powder. I have a 50 cal. use 50 to 60 gr. of powder with a 350gr. max hunter bullet. at 50 to 75 yards goes through a 3 to 4 in. phonebook and the 1/4 in. plywood be hind it. more than enough to kill anything. many bison were killed from a long distance with a 45/70 blackpowerd gun.
